No pickers means no produce.

If all the immigrant workers get bused back to Mexico who will keep picking the fruit and vegetables that goes onto the shop shelves and on to your dinner table?

What do readers think would be a reasonable hourly wage to get paid for picking fruit if you had to help harvest a crop and get it to market?
Ontheroad · M
I suspect a lot of this round 'em up and deport them is going to be a lot of noise, PR, confusion, upheaval, and grabbing the low-hanging fruit... and it will cost us billions.

Still, it will get the blowhard the publicity he wants, and in the end, that's all that matters to him.

This all could have been so much simpler, so much more humane, and in the end, cost us way less by just having Congress do its job.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Ontheroad I agree, this is going to be like building the wall. He will pull the low hanging fruit and enact some measures, but most of the bluster was just nonsense campaign talk; he needed a villain.
@Ontheroad The Corporations that employ the most illegals won't be touched. Why don't we start with the illegals that work in Trump Hotels and Golf Courses.

That's a problem we had in the UK immediately post-Brexit. A lot of young people from Eastern Europe used to come to the UK at harvest time to work on the fields. When we left the EU and they no longer had the right to work here, there was a serious agricultural labour shortage and literally tonnes of produce was left to rot in the fields because there were insufficient workers to havest it.
barney1 · M
@Sharon the other point is because of this and Brexit in general it has pushed the prices up and we have empty shelves at times in the shops
Sharon · F
@barney1 That's right. Luckily I live in the country and some local farmers let it be known that we could help ourselves to food from the fields as it was only going to rot otherwise. As you say, at the same time there were empty shelves in the shops.

well, they should get minimum wage right? oh but they dont cause theyre illegal? how is that in any way right? sometimes people have to stand up for injustice even if it might hurt them somehow. the sad part is the illegal workers want the money anyway, not to get deported. they want to work and live in the US but they are here illegally. so its really not cool that they are welcomed like that by the corporations and such. if i was looking for a job picking veggies id want at least minimum wage. if they couldnt find work then maybe they wouldnt come. if they are really that necessary then they should come up with like a migrant worker program or something that would be fair to everyone and not exploit them as well as offering the same job opportunities to citizens.
Penny · 46-50, F
@JimboSaturn well then they should make it at least that theyre not here doing it illegally. if they cant do that then the whole system needs to change. why not shop more direct from farms and stuff like that. more pick your own produce and junk places. maybe it could be done. more coop type places involving the members helping harvest could be part of a solution. this may not apply to the huge fields that i know exist but generally those are prolly the ones we wouldnt want to eat food from anyway as theyre doused in chemicals.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@justanothername I actually feel sorry for the farmers. Farmers grow all out food but get paid squat prices for the labour. Meanwhile, the retail stores, grocery stores inflate the price and make all the money.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Penny I think most of them are legal. At least in Canada. I love the idea of bypassing the retail by using co-ops like you said! I would much prefer to give my money to the farmer .
specman · 51-55, M
The illegals from other countries and terrorists are a threat to national security.
We let illegals from countries that are in a civil war or anti American countries or those that have violent tendencies against America are the main problem. If you don’t mind illegals then you can support them yourself instead of using taxpayers money.
Convivial · 26-30, F
@specman what intrigues me, an outsider, is that I believe domestic hun deaths each year account for more than any terrorist activities... Including 9/11 🤔
@specman If that were all true, sure. lol

Here in the UK we adhere to something called the 'Posted Workers Directive' which means a farmer can employ foreign workers and legally pay them a lower wage than the minimum wage a UK worker would be entitled to.
That fact tends to be not so well advertised when the media whinges on about UK citizens not willing to do the work. It's he farmers employing foreign, cheaper labour.
Chief77 · 46-50, M
I’m not concerned about the price or who will pick fruit. Enter legally or go back. The money saved by cutting the department of education and the fbi will save us more than enough to subsidize if necessary. The fruit picking seems like a minor issue comparatively. Just something negative for liberals to rail against.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Chief77 That's true, I ASSUME that most of the immigrant workers are legal.
@Chief77 You are an example of why we need the Dept of Education.
shinyplasticlove · 51-55, M
We were doing just fine before illegals came in.
@shinyplasticlove Ummm just not. Reagan invented the "illegal" immigrant problem by arbitrarily deciding to make seasonable migrant work illegal.

But hey, if you want to watch your grocery bill skyrocket to virtue signal to what was basically a racist stunt from day one. That is on you.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
More than one grower has had their workers deported and found themselves unable to hire any citizens to do the work. So they bought machinery. But machinery does not spend a paycheck at the local businesses in town.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@DrWatson Our whole system is pretty broken. I find it amazing. The essentials like food and clean water we don't value and never want to pay a lot but we can spend $1,700 on a phone. We have some strange priorities.
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
@JimboSaturn Completely understand your point. BUT even if I was a trillionaire I wouldn't spend anywhere near 1K let alone approaching 2K on a phone
Why do you think Republicans are trying to change the age that children can have a full time job? And lets not forget they want to end Public Education.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
justanothername · 51-55, M
@JimboSaturn There’s a lot of AI required to get the grape picking process automated. That’s a very much learn as you go process.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@justanothername Oh I bet. I also don't doubt that it will be perfected.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@JimboSaturn It will eventually. During the human process a wine maker walks the vineyard several times a day picking and sampling individual grapes to see if they have the right sugar content and flavour. He or she will keep walking the rows picking and eating, picking and eating until thr decision is made to PICk these grapes. From that point it’s all hands on deck to get that paddock harvested before it rains. Harvesting can take up to 18 hours to complete.
Whatever you think, multiply it by a lot.

fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
There isn't much produce picking going on in NYC, or any of the other "sanctuary cities" where the illegals concentrate.
@fanuc2013 Have fun when your grocery bills go up because 50% of agricultural workers are gone.

Not many entitled Republicans willing to do hard work either.
@fanuc2013 And tell me without telling me you base your opinions of feelings and vibes and stuff you saw Tom Selleck say on Blue Bloods and not facts or data.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
We can't afford our food now. Wait until we have to pick it ourselves! Also wait until we have to pay for the items we use when we make it. Good luck!

The average worker makes about $13 hr 46+hrs week, seasonal work, mostly men with families and close to 80% are here legally.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Going to be hard to enforce if the farmers get together and are pointing guns at any feds that show up.
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
@Tastyfrzz Work visas instead of illegals
Convivial · 26-30, F
As the Chinese say, may you live in interesting times... It'll be a case of bluster runs into reality
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
Kinda racist
justanothername · 51-55, M
@Patriot96 How so? Have you ever seen white Americans picking fruit and produce commercially?
