It's the sugars in the veggies that attract them.

Bet you if it came down to starvation they would eat regular fruit.

They just specialized. Less competition on veggies.

yeah most of the banana flies I get spawn from vegetables, especially since I very rarely eat fruit. Vegetables are often fruit though, technically speaking.
