Making dinner for my neighbor

Tonight is my turn to make dinner for a very special neighbor. He lost his wife just a few months ago after more than 60 years of marriage—and in all that time, he never had to cook a meal for himself. Before she passed, she had one request for us: to make sure he never went without a home-cooked meal. So, the women on our street came together and created a rotation to cook for him, each of us taking a turn.

Tonight, I’m making chicken parmesan with angel hair pasta and garlic bread. Even though I’m not feeling my best, there’s a comfort in knowing he’ll enjoy it. Our neighborhood looks out for one another, and I think that’s what makes this feel so special—it’s not just about the food, it’s about the love and care behind it.

Cooking brings me peace, even if I don’t sit down to eat it myself. And tonight, that peace is knowing I get to help carry out a promise made to a loving wife and a grieving husband.
