i am about to embark and go boldly...explore a world that is new to me...cooking

do i use the old fashioned iron skillet??
does a potato require longer baking time than the meat in a casserole?? or they go in dish together??
do i fix soup overnight while i sleep in crockpot?? or during day while i work 12 hours?? what if it dryes up??
the kitchen is mom's domain and all were forbidden to ever touch a recipe, pan, oven growing up.
she has only months to live now, still dad and i are not allowed in kitchen as she is on her deathbed.
why are recipes considered TOP SECRET by so many people??
