I Enjoy Food and Cooking
I love my food, perhaps a little too much at times! I enjoy the different tastes, experimenting with recipes and sharing time with others while enjoying food.
There's something to be said about locally sourced ingredients too. However most of our food comes from the local super market, which I visit once at week.
It's shameful to know that in our 1st world society there are men, women and children who go hungry because they can't afford to buy food. For me food is an enjoyment while for some it's a precious resource, a resource they struggle to attain at times.
In the U.K. there is estimated to be over 2,000 food banks operating. For those who don't know what a food bank is it is a bank of food supplies for those who can't afford to buy food. People are referred to the banks, so it's not a free for all, and are given a three day emergency supply of food.
The people who access the banks aren't scroungers or lazy. They are people who the benefit system has failed to act as there safety net for or people the government has failed in allowing business to pay such poor wages that even being in work doesn't prevent people from needing help with the basics. When those in work need benefits or food banks it's basically state aid to private businesses by enabling them to pay such poor wages and get away with it.
Many people who access the benefit system have paid taxes all their life's and should therefore be able to rely on the state to help them during hard times.
Increasingly the state and media are portraying those who need benefits and other help as responsible for their situation which they could have avoided, like some how they are to blame and it's okay to treat them poorly.
It worries me that I could one they be very easily in the position of needing to access a food bank. I could be made redundant or fall ill and have to leave my job. I hope if that time ever comes that there will be people kind enough to donate food to a food bank that would be able to support me.
While I'm not in that position and have a disposable income I have decided to play my part in supporting those in need. Each week when I do my food shop I am going to donate £1 worth of food to my local food bank. I won't miss £1 each week and it will go towards helping someone put food on their table. This means picking up some extra food during the shop and dropping it into the collection point in store after going through the check out.
In my town there are over 73,000 households, if just half of them donated a £1s worth of food each week that would provide £36,500 worth of food donations to the food banks. This would enable them to provide more help to more people and would make our society a better place.
Donations to food banks support those who struggle to put food on their table in your own town - yes your town as most food donations are used in the same area of donations to support local family's, possibly even your neighbours, friends or family.
If your interested in doing the same as me and donating a £1 of food, or whatever you can afford, each week Google your towns name and the phrase 'food bank'. You'll be able to find out how to support your local bank, what food supplies the bank needs and where to drop of your donations.
