Tim Horton

Tim Horton passed away 50 years ago on February 21. He played over 20 years for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres. Sadly, the 4 time Stanley Cup winner is better known to many for his coffee shop business than his hockey playing career.

I live where the most famous hockey game in America was played. USA vs Russia in 1980.
@Sevendays that game was rigged
Sevendays · M
@beermeplease hahaha....you're funny.
@Sevendays i think i'm being serious
Sevendays · M
@beermeplease then you're mistaken.
@Sevendays there's no way in hell a bunch of amateurs from the us in that time could beat a super power like russia or canada during that time. it's like india beating the usa in a football game.
Sevendays · M
@beermeplease just watch the game. There's no way the USSR was playing to lose. Look at the saves that the USA goaltender made. Sorry that you can't accept that a bunch of amateurs did beat Canada and Russia.
@Sevendays ok...maybe like like the dream team losing to greece or who ever in basketball

@beermeplease But they did. Hence the name "Miracle on Ice." If anyone thinks Communist Russia at that time would EVER consider rigging a game against the U.S. it's just a matter of checking out the politics of 1980. Nah. They got beat. And for a lot of Americans they can remember where they were when it happened. It was a BIG deal.

@Sevendays I used to do work with a sports/entertainment tour, they would go to Lake Placid each year to put it together and I LOVED going for a week or so. Such a great vibe. I think the only spot in NY where i could live happily. Great area.

@Ynotisay I don't like it as much as I used to. A lot of properties are being bought up for high $ and locals have a hard time living here. Still a good place to live though.
Ynotisay · M
@beermeplease Nope. That's just not what went down. Outside of the fact that more than 40 years later there hasn't been ANY substantiated report of rigging but high level athletes do NOT fix games. Especially if they were from someplace like Communist Russia, That probably won't change your mind though. Some prefer belief. Not sure why but it is what it is.

@Sevendays I live in a mountain resort area so I get that. It's happened everywhere. Big money moves in and locals get screwed. Reason #21 I think short term rentals need to be banned because they've had a definite influence.
Sevendays · M
@Ynotisay they definitely have made fewer homes available for buyers. Many of the locals who did live here sold their houses for inflated prices and moved to Saranac Lake
Ynotisay · M
@Sevendays Yeah. People leave. And I imagine the same thing will play out in Saranac Lake. What's happened where I am is that less people are willing to rent to locals because they know people are out there wanting investment properties. No housing means workers leave and businesses close. But the STR thing has a ceiling and a whole lot of people who bought them, sometimes without even seeing them in person, are getting hammered. They're not making their nut. So they try to get out but the asking price is set to cover their losses. It's a vicious cycle.
