"You can either be late or Chinese." 😆 That's one way to put it.
I once signed up for a fitness course and their policy was that if you missed one class, you were banned.
I thought maybe it was just an "on paper" thing and they didn't necessarily do that, until I called them from a hospital to explain why I missed a class, and the lady said, "We already took you off the books."

My college was kind of like that. If you failed for grades they would let you retake the course for free. If you dropped below 90% attendance you were failed out and had to pay for the course. Some of the shorter courses that can be done by missing one day.

We had 10 to 15 minutes check-in opportunity. Not 5 👀
And not just 2 absences. I believe if it was medically justified, 5 was okay.
And never retake anything for free. Scholarships were available though and I used plenty of the opportunities to pay for tuition espacially at the beginning.
If it were up to me, we should get assessed at the beginning and just skip the need for certain attendance requirements depending on the results. Plenty of times I was already competent in the content. Could have spared myself lot of unnecessary back pain.
Sometimes I only needed the final exam as proof of mastering the related course. The rest was way too redundant.
Same now.

@Miram Yeah, if the result is what matters the rest should be flexed around. But I guess part of it is getting you ready for careers and a lot of places can be hardline about having time off.
My freshman year of high school they offered something they called "mastery" classes. Basically what they did is they had the lectures pre-taped, the assignments and tests for the year pre-printed, and basically let everyone in the class go at their own pace. The teacher was then freed to answer questions and provide one on one help it needed. Some of us managed to finish the course months or weeks early. Such programs feel like they would be even easier to pull off these days. Unfortunately, the high school didn't keep those programs going. But it was a good year. Because as you said, someone already competent could just slam through the assignments and tests and be done.

There deep American proverb. It say...You can call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner.
