@Telcontar not all Costco's sell liquor. I did read however, they are the world's largest wine sellers.

Ironically, it took Costco more than 26 years of lobbying before it could sell alcohol in Kirkland.

@Northwest that is funny, Kirkland, is that where its brand name came from?
Northwest · M
@samueltyler2 Yes, this is where the brand came from. Friends and family who visit me the first time always say "oh, so this is where it comes from". :-)

Interesting article. The Kirkland store was their second. The first was in a less than premium part of Seattle.

I don't think Sinegal had an idea how successful this was going to be. He had some people from the Kirkland store come to the lunch room of the startup I had joined not too long prior. When we looked at the prices, we were like "hell yeah", we could eat for less than $5 per day, and never leave the office.

Kirkland, however, is water-front, which wasn't a problem back then, as this was a blue collar working class town at the time. When it came time to really expand, overlooking both the water and the Olympics, Cascades and Rainier, and the locals replaced by tens of thousands of millionaires, they moved headquarters uphill to Issaquah, which was a small town, kind of like a Bavaria feel. It's now big.

Homes in Kirkland now for $5M-$15M for a small family home. For a waterfront 1/5th of an acre home, you need to drop $20M+.

This made me laugh:

x“Nobody could spell Issaquah, so we kept it.”

@Northwest I can't remember the actual original name, but our major store, the one that carries alcoholic beverages, was called something else firs.

@samueltyler2 In Washington State, by law, the only place where hard liquor could be sold, was State Liquor store. They pretty much had banking hours and were closed on Sundays. Costco pretty much paid for the campaign to pass a law to allow private liquor sales, with an added 20.5% tax. This was in 2011.

@Northwest Google helps again: Price Club was an American warehouse club chain. Founded in 1976, it merged with its competitor, Costco Wholesale, in 1993. The original Price Club warehouse in San Diego, California, is now Costco location number 401.[1]

@samueltyler2 There was a Price Club where I grew up in the Bay Aera.

@Northwest i think my first membership was in Price Club.
