Just saw a news blurb where a couple went out to dinner

And the bill came to 200 bucks (US) and the waiter refused a 50 dollar tip. The server went on to say that if they couldn't pay 85 dollars then we shouldn't eat out

That is 42.5 per cent of the bill...

I would have had a talk with the manager and ask if that was the expectation at the facility. If so...I would never come back.

I want a meal...not another dependent.

Wow! I have a feeling that waiter won't have a job very long.

I would have then smiled, keep the $50 and thank the server for the tip.

I'm glad i don't eat out enough for me to run into this problem
I've always tipped based on the service the waiter provided
Not necessarily on the bill total
They don't deserve more just because the resturant charges more
If they can't survive on what the resturant pays find another job
If the resturant didn't get people to work they would have to pay more or close

@Pretzel

Plus 15% is standard so on $ 200 it's $ 30
So this server was out of his mind

@pdockal or in california...oh same thing

(Said by a florida man) :)

@Pretzel

California are out of their minds anyway

I would have paid the $200, and complained to the manager about the ignorant and rude waiter

Well now that people who get tips don’t have to get taxed on tips unless that make over $70,000 a year this is ridiculous. A tip should be considered a voluntary gift especially considering they won’t be taxed. And if they do get taxed that means they are raking in a hell of a lot more money than I ever made at any job, no tips but I would have appreciated anything that came my way.

Coin roll hunting...I had a bunch of half-dollars left over and started spending them at the gas station every week. One day I paid and the cashier got all PO'd...NOBODY WANTS THESE THINGS!
Waveney · M
Is it true that there are self-service checkouts in America that you are "encouraged" to tip???
Pretzel · 70-79, M
@Waveney dome of the drive thru have them but I haven't seen one at a self serve. But I wouldn't doubt it
This is why I do not tip unless there was some extra services outside bringing me my food. Plus these punks have no tax on tips now, right?

Best tip I've had was a guy came into my pizza restaurant, bought a small pizza and a drink for his son, about £6, paid for it with a £50 note, and then f*cked off!

Unbelievable

Let's all agree to normalize this response to such b.s. ..

@jshm2 I agree. It's like they can hide the price of the meal and make you feel obligated to pay their employees

i wouldnt have left a tip

I completely agree with you. I definitely would not have offered the tip a second time. I wouldn't have come back either.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti I definitely agree with you. Spending a fortune doesn't guarantee a good meal. Knowing good and inexpensive places are far more fulfilling.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Musicman When you go to a fancy restaurant you’re in part paying for how much it cost to build & furnish or remodel that restaurant, plus the advertising etc. I like locally-owned restaurants rather than big chains. My favorite Thai restaurants are a small OKC area chain and they hire Thai cooks, which makes it authentic. Their prices are very reasonable and the food is always excellent too.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti Our Thai place here has gotten really expensive. ☹
