My Grandmother used to make a pastry called a "kringla". It was a different pastry than your picture shows. It was a sweet bread pretzel shaped item with caraway seeds (?). Both of my sisters went to stay with her for weeks to learn how to bake like she did. Alas, they never learned how to make the kringlas. Grandma was Norwegian.
