Is it important to peel fresh ginger?

I always try remove the outer skin but it is very fiddly .

I peel it the best I can with a spoon, then grate it on a micro plane. This isn't perfect, but if you stop every six to ten strokes, much of the covering remains on the top side of the plane. Brush it off and keep grating.
