As a kid, an elderly neighbour used make me what became the benchmark of salads. Lots of fruit. She'd encourage me to pick in her garden as many of the ingredients as possible for maximum freshness - lettuce, spring onions, peas, beans, strawberries, potatoes ..Anything could go in as long as it wasn't meat : orange segments, grapefruit segments, raisins, grapes, even sorbet. Anything I didn't like she'd invariably say "Good! All the more for me!". A happy memory.

@MellyMel22 It is. I became a vegetarian at the age of about eight and used to enquire into the ingredients of everything. When I asked her what went into salad cream I was told "Pigs' Toes", but when she realised I was taking it seriously she went out of her way to assure me she was joking!
