I Did A Search On Walmart for Nutella and One Of The Categories They Had It Listed For Was “Hurricane Foods”…

So now Nutella is a survival food.

Like peanut butter. Long self life. Pretty much anything made of nuts would be. Why squirrels horde and hide them over the long winter.

@DeWayfarer There’s a woman who posts You Tube videos of camping and building little cabins etc. They bought some land in Alaska and it had a concrete block survival shelter on it. The ceiling had leaked and ruined all of the stored stuff the man had left behind in it. All kinds of foods that she cleaned out and threw away (she got one of those long dumpsters like construction companies use to discard all that stuff). But a few few items she sampled. Peanuts that were almost 20 years old. She said they were not rancid and she kept every jar of them.

@cherokeepatti squirrels have been doing it for thousands of years. I like to learn from nature. 😊

@DeWayfarer some nuts and seeds will get rancid within a year…pecans and sunflower seeds especially.

@cherokeepatti ever noticed squirrels don't horde or hide those? They eat them right away! 😊

@DeWayfarer well who wouldn’t? But yes squirrels will hide pecans. I have found them buried in flower pots and the concrete herb garden that i made in the back yard when I go to plant something else in the spring.

@cherokeepatti don't have pecans here. Yet sunflowers there are plenty. I have yet to find a squirrel hiding sunflower seeds.

@DeWayfarer probably too little for them. I have a small pecan tree and the little bastards have already stripped the pecans off of it. I should have gotten up on a ladder and sprayed each one with cayenne pepper water. It hasn’t rained enough to wash it off.

@cherokeepatti good way to stop them 👍

@DeWayfarer too late this year though. When I had a bird feeder they would steal the sunflower seeds. I finally got a bottle of cayenne pepper and mixed it with the seeds and filled the feeder with them. It stopped those squirrels real quick.
