I got to figure out how to feed myself and my son for less than 200 a month now. Tell me what you do to save on food costs, how do you get the most

Bang for you buck?
HikingMan · 51-55, M
Fresh healthy fruits and veggies should be replaced by frozen ones.
If those still prove too expensive, then you'll need to switch to canned goods.
Chicken and pork remain the lowest priced meat options and less lean hamburger is another affordable protein.

Meal plans are the key and learning to cook only what you plan to eat saves on waste.

When bigger meals are cooked, proper storage and an actual plan to eat those leftovers is a must.

When my son was young, I was dirt poor. I made meals for one and then fed him first eating only what he did not finish .
I lost 36 lbs in a year and knew it wasn't a sustainable proposition for the long term.
But we got by and he never knew how much I looked forward to KRAFT macaroni and cheese night each week.
I also drank a lot of water to give myself a fuller feeling.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@HikingMan I once bought a 15 dollar salad for a buddies wife and made him pay me back for it after she took only 3 bites. I was so pissed.
HikingMan · 51-55, M
@AthrillatheHunt Food waste drives me insane. Like totally angry insane.
Most likely because I know the feeling of slowly starving to death.
Thank goodness my time spent in such a way was only for 2 years.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@HikingMan I feel you brother .
my family struggled mightily from about age 10-15 .
Like borderline being made fun of for being poor.
Hey beautiful!
there are many ways you can save money in grocery shopping but also food waste . The biggest one would be planning in advance. Essentially your big 3 meals ,or two big meals , and snacks throughout the day. You can get a lot of meal ideas online that are free and easy and can cater to any diet. Then write a grocery list of the ingredients you will need and search the prices online before shopping to conclude on a budget etc. This is the best thing I have done ,when not lazy haha , that saves me money and food waste. it literally pains me whenever I have to throw out food .
Other things would be promotional offers (f.e. here we have clubcards where we get discounted items ) coupons , etc. I remember watching a show about people saving crazy amount of money in America through coupons and honestly its really impressive . Good luck and thinking of you

@SW-User I used to find Sunday newspaper in newspaper recycling bins (quite a while back) when I was taking my newspapers there to recycle. I would reach down and get them and find newspaper inserts, sometimes 4 or 5 of each insert. Would take them home and go through them and clip coupons for the items that I bought.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti that's a good idea
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User you can find some great recipes on You Tube and Pinterest. I made a red lentil-veggie soup posted on You Tube by cooks, they had English subtitles with the amount of each ingredient. The soup was really good. I save some of his recipes… There is a German one that posts recipes on You Tube that are generally easy to make and some frugal ones too…Schnell Lecker is his name.

Lentils, beans, rice, peanut butter, Eggs, potatoes, fruits & veggies on sale and in season, tortillas, . Some low cost meals, soft tacos with flour or corn tortillas and salsa and onions. Omelettes are good. Homemade soups with or without a little meat, Mac & cheese, homemade waffles from scratch or crepes or pancakes. Rice pilafs with veggies and some meat like chicken legs. I make one with green frozen Lima beans and green dill and onions and can substitute fresh or frozen green beans for the Lima beans. If you have an Aldi store near you they have the best prices for basic groceries
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
@SW-User Aldi and Lidi are brilliant there are also lots of other discount supermarkets in Germany, I like one called penny they always have things with big discounts but only in limited numbers so if you see it best buy it then.
SW-User
@Justenjoyit I don't have any of those here They haven't made it to my side of the country
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Justenjoyit it’s good to find those type of stores. We have a discount store in Oklahoma City that sells Amazon and store returns for one price starting at $5 and lowering it each day through Wednesday. I have gotten big cans of milk powder for $ 5 and put them in the freezer. Also coffee. Bought a 5 pound bag of whole bean coffee for $5 and it’s an expensive brand selling for $65 on Amazon, a lot of gluten free items for $2 and big boxes of multi packs of snacks and health food items for $5
Pfuzylogic · M
I have been buying pork loin instead of chicken for a lean meat. I think it is around $3 a pound. I get breads, desserts and cheese from the clearance area.
SW-User
@Pfuzylogic that's a good option.

Make and Drink Cold or Iced 🧊 Tea!
Sweetened or Unsweetened it is Absolutely Cheapest Drinkable Liquid that has a decent Taste!

Family Size Generic Tea Bags are so Inexpensive! Only 2 Bags will make ONE GALLON of Decently Strong Iced Tea for OMFG !! 😲 just 15¢/Gallon or less!
It's an 🤣 outrageous 25¢/Gal even if you use the Small "Expensive" Tea Bags of those Unused Fancy Flavoured Teas or Herb 🌿 Teas you've got collected and haven't used up like me! 😆

Or be Dumb & Lazy! Buy a Jug of PREMADE Arizona, Gold Peak, TAZO, or Lipton Iced Tea for $2⁷⁵ to $5⁸⁹/Gallon !! 🤦🏻‍♀️

That's an easy 2000% to 4800% Markup! The Jug's LID likely costs more than the Tea inside! 🤷🏻‍♂️ a Large Glass of Watered Down Iced Tea at Restaurants, like $3²⁹ @ Olive Garden cost them 1¢ max! So that's a 25,000% Markup! FREE REFILLS! Yes of Course! 🤓

Drop 1± "Family-Sized (or 3-4 regular) Tea Bags in 2 Quart Pitcher with 1 Quart of Water, Microwave it Boiling, add Sweetner as Desired, then fill the Remaining Quart with Ice to Melt & Dilute. DRINK!

PS:
Rum, Whiskey, Bourbon & Gin can make various Tea Flavours all Adulty like! 🙌🏻 Wooo! 👍🏻 Look it up!

Coupons, price matching, go meatless, eat cheaply so eggs and beans and so many other cheap recipes
SW-User
@Jenny1234 yes I buy eggs in bulk. I don't even really like them but they are cheap protein
I JUST got home from DOLLAR GENERAL

Believe it or not DOLLAR GENERAL's Prices were still Easily Less than the 3 Regional Supermarkets and comparable to Walmart!
Especially cheap were the StoreBrand items. They're Satisfaction Guaranteed and I've never had an issue with the Quality. The StoreBrand is about 15-20% off the Name Brands.
Quite a few Name Brand Items are 10¢ to $1⁰⁰ LESS than Albertsons & Winn-Dixie has them priced.

Cheapest place for Laundry & Cleaning supplies about equal to Walmart and easier to shop in.
Great StoreBrand prices on Typical Over the Counter Pain Relievers, Antiacids, Antihistamines, Vitamins, etc .
calicuz · 56-60, M
Start at Aldi's, then Walmart, then work your way up to the major grocery stores. Buy all the store brands or generic brands that you can handle. Not everything generic is good, so pic what's right for you and your son.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
The majority of my food does not come from stores, I use local farmers both individually and at a farmers market. This saves a lot and the food is much better, I also have a garden.
Convivial · 26-30, F
Agree with the comment about frozen veggies... Cheaper and often fresher... Just don't cook them till they're dead lol
Quetzalcoatlus · 46-50, M
That’s close to impossible, you’re gonna need help.
SW-User
@Quetzalcoatlus I don't have any help I am going to have to make it happen
Quetzalcoatlus · 46-50, M
@SW-User Are there food banks nearby? Maybe government assistance?
ScarletWitch · 31-35, F
EBT. Or link card. Food funds from the government. If u have a child u can get cash benifits as well.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
Most supermarkets here are self serve it's easy to just not scan a few items
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
That’s truly a tough spot .
I never liked rahmen noodles but I would do PBandJ or oatmeal.
zeitgeist0 · 31-35, M
dollar tree's freezer section/cleaning supplies and household stuff
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
The problem is. Many have the same Ideas during Crises
SW-User
@FreestyleArt I know but I truly will only have that much so I got to find a way
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
I have noticed that there are things that have been reduced by 30% more regularly than before, maybe look out for them first, just cut out things you dont really need.
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
@SW-User where I live in Germany they put 30% less on food that is running out, I buy that and then just freeze it
SW-User
@Justenjoyit yes they have something similar here some of its expired but the expiration dates are just recommended not always means it's bad.
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
@SW-User Exactly either eat it that day or freeze it if you can
Bang5luts · M
I literally have less than $100 per month for food for myself. The elitists and they poor starving family's need more money..
SW-User
@Bang5luts wow that's awesome, I haven't seen prices like that around here. I try all the stores ads now and go to different stores for different sales but maybe my neck of woods is slow to catch up to prices going down
Bang5luts · M
@SW-User I lived in Oregon and Northern Californi both of their food prices are astronomically higher than here, same with Washington..
SW-User
@Bang5luts Yep, I was in Alabama in June and it shocked me how much lower food costs were there than here. Almost half no joke 😔
Bang5luts · M
I'm going to dm you a couple of private non-pervy, suggestions to help out. And no dick pics. 😊😇
SW-User
@Bang5luts lol thanks
Bang5luts · M
Get meat, vegetables and fruits from good grocery store and all else from cheap one, check all dates on all food packages
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
My gf is a personal shopper and is on top of all food store sales.
SW-User
@uncalled4 I've been checking the weekly add but damn the prices of everything are just so high. I am just trying to find creative ways to make it go farther. Maybe soups, chilis etc
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@SW-User Do you have price clubs like BJs and Costco near you? Buying in bulk can help.
SW-User
@uncalled4 yes I have Costco but the price of meat there still isn't great. I do but in bulk and freeze thankfully I have an extra freezer it really helps
MethDozer · M
Deer season opens soon
candycane · 31-35, F
