I'm guessing because since pickles last so long from the pickling they rather have cheap labor to make more at once and increase the profit margin. Here in New York most groceries also sell locally grown pickles. I notice all the Kosher Dill ones taste the same, so I usually get those.

I made a bunch of my own this year, they turned out amazing!!

@SHREKPage We used to buy Polish pickles in the 70’s and 80’s, they were an authentic brand and they stopped selling them. I’d sure like to know their recipe. I just used Mrs. Wages Polish pickle mix to make mine but they weren’t near as good as that brand they sold in grocery stores.
@cherokeepatti I grew up a farm kid with everything you can think of preserved and jarred.

@SHREKPage we did too on the farm.

Family recipe for dills:

Pick dill and cucumbers. Cukes should be about 8 inches long.
Wash cucumbers.
Put a couple heads of dill in half-gallon jars and pack cucumbers in tightly.
Put salt in water until it will float an egg.
Mix in equal amount of apple vinegar.
Bring to boil.
Fill each jar up to 1/2 inch from top.
Cap and turn upside-down to seal.
I love dill pickles! Yum
Maybe it's cheaper to import
India has cheap labour

@RadiantRuby yeah probably but shipping costs on top of it. They are good & crunchy though.

I buy the tiny ones also. They are so crunchy and good! For a while I was able to buy Mt. Olive brand, which is located in North Carolina, I believe...but I noticed the pickles are getting larger and larger.

Just double checked, and Mt. Olive's headquarters is in North Carolina, but they buy their pickles from Canada, Greece, Mexico and India.

@4meAndyou The big jars of tiny pickles sold at Sams are Mt Olive brand, now shipped from India

Everything is about corporatization now. If a company or store can save even 2cents per jar by outsourcing to India then they will do it.
Its sad because there are so many things that we just don't produce at any scale here in the USA anymore and that is not a good thing to HAVE to rely on others countries for necessities when we are so wealthy here.
Plus I think that a well rounded economy creates more jobs at varying levels within our society now its all haves and have nots.

Best Maid pickles are still made in Ft Worth. They grown their cucumbers in the Texas panhandle.
