Is Anyone Still Disinfecting Their Groceries?

I ran out of Lysol/Clorox wipes, and can’t find them anywhere. I’ve been using those tiny squares of 70% isopropyl alcohol instead. Do you think it’s safe on the food packages, and will it kill the virus?

supposedly, it's not necessary to disinfect groceries, except fresh produce, before storing them, but to answer your second question, yes, 70% isopropyl alcohol is enough to kill the virus within 30 seconds, as long as you don't dilute it further.

Thanks. I’m not sure how much dilution takes place from the condensation on frozen packages. I’ll just hope for the best. @SW-User

@Carissimi the most significant risk of transmission is from person to person. transmission from surfaces is low, unless you're in a clinical setting with covid patients. it does lower your already low chances of surface transmission to wipe your groceries down. i use the same strength alcohol in a spray bottle to disinfect my groceries that have been delivered to my front door while they are still outside under direct sunlight, which further degrades the lipids that hold the virus together. then i wash produce in the sink with a mild detergent in water and then rinse extra well. after that, i disinfect kitchen surfaces and wash my hands to the elbows like a surgeon. :)

anyway, i've had a cold since the pandemic started and after staying at home and social distancing started, so something got to me even with wearing a mask, washing hands, and cleaning surfaces. so, who knows? i don't even know if i had a mild case of covid or some other common cold. all i know is i feel fine now.

@SW-User yeah, I'm seeing it now [for a while O wasn't able to find it online] but it sure doesn't cost what it used to. I just use bleach so it's not a concern, more of a disappointment.

@Starcrossed bleach does take longer to kill the virus. but you can wipe it all down and wait a half hour before you handle the packages again.

i got my rubbing alcohol from a friend who's mother works at a Dollar Store. her mother held some back to buy for her, her daughter, and a few select friends. i'm not sure if that's against any rules, but her boss did approve it.

I’m glad you are doing better. I tend to see it like this: Even though I’m high risk, I believe my chances of catching it from person to person are low because I only see the grocery person who puts my items in my trunk. So as the surface is my most likely source of transmission, I don’t want to take a chance. After saying this, last Christmas I thought my chance of catching the flu was low because during winter I hardly go out, except for groceries, and I stay away from anyone coughing or sneezing. What I didn’t account for was one person almost coughing in my face, as they were about to walk by me. He didn’t even put his hand over his mouth. My first thought was, “oh God, don’t let me get sick.” Three days later I came down with the flu, which went into my lungs, and took me weeks to recover from, and months to get back to normal strength. What that taught me is it only takes one person to make you ill, even when you are doing everything you can to prevent it. Of course, I wasn’t wearing a mask back then, and no one knew about social distancing. @SW-User

i think it's a good thing to do, especially in your case, disinfecting all items that come into your home. i'm sorry you got the flu. i had it a few years back and it was horrific, no exaggeration. i'm glad you've recovered.

one thing i'm doing now that i didn't do before that i wish more people knew about is, i'm taking close to the upper limit level of vitamid D. i used to take 2,000 IU per day, but when i caught that cold recently, i upped it to 3,000 during the cold, then i went up further to 4,000 IU a day. i read some data about inverse relationships between covid severity and vit D levels, and i researched upper limits. i feel fantastic since i've done this in more ways than enhanced immunity. i also take a magnesium supplement to help my body process the vit D, and i make sure to eat foods high in vit K, because it keeps vit D from depositing calcium anywhere it shouldn't be, i.e. soft tissues.

I need to start taking vitamin D because I’ve heard this too, and from a source I trust. Do you listen to Dr. John on YT? He’s an English professor of nursing retired, and he gives daily updates on what’s going on around the world with Covid. He’s non political and has no agenda except to give the best scientific facts. I’ve been listening to him for months. He talks about vitamin D, and how it’s needed for the immune system, so I believe it. @SW-User

@Carissimi i hadn't heard of him, but i'm gonna check him out. i've been alerted to the vit D connection through a site called earth clinic, plus i'd already read a ton about it, but would only take 2,000 IU for years to keep me barely sufficient. now i should have levels near 60, which is preferable in these times. thanks for telling me about Dr. John. :)
