Do you have meat shortages where you live? Is meat the new toilet paper?

Local grocery stores in Massachusetts have made packages of meat smaller,and they are limiting meat to two packages per customer.

SO...I would like to make this post all about MEATLESS PROTEIN!!!

For example, did you know that beans...(like pinto beans, navy beans, etc.), and HOMINY (leached corn), when eaten together, form a complete protein?

Please post your favorite meatless meals here.

Plenty of meat still. However, I have lived in poverty and you learn to stretch out your meat a little better. Some people just don't know how to cook.

@raysam363 I made beans from scratch the other night, the boy says beans were not a favorite and didn’t eat them. Last night he asked what I was going to cook. I said we have leftover beans, Spanish rice & steamed veggies. He suggested bean & cheese burritos and ate those with Spanish rice. He needs to learn to like beans because if meat gets too expensive we won’t be having it every night or just use a little in soup or something.

@cherokeepatti Rice and beans are great staples, also easy to season.

@raysam363 I have had to stretch my budget since my second marriage...and you learn all the tricks. If there is a one pound package of hamburger, for example, I used to buy 2 lbs of soy granules, reconstitute them with water and mix them with the burger. It's not bad...honestly. Tastes like meatloaf more than burger.

@4meAndyou I cannot stand the flavor of meat mixed with soy. I can eat beans or eat meat but no soy in my meat. The last time I bought a sandwich at Subway it was a meatball sandwich and all I could taste was the soy filler. So I never bought anything from them again and that was in 2012.

@cherokeepatti There are tons of egg dishes, too. Bean burritos are delish, and healthy, too!

@4meAndyou yes we have eggs often too. I have been making egg and cheese burritos in corn tortillas for his breakfast. He needs to learn to eat some beans. Told him that I’m not making a big amount of meat every night like before. I stocked up on chicken breasts & legs when they were on sale, so have enough of those. But even so it’ll be about one leg per serving of whatever I cook it in.

@cherokeepatti AND of course, Peanut butter. Peanut butter quick breads...stuff like that.

@4meAndyou He eats too much peanut butter & peanuts as it is. I’m not encouraging more. I made him waffles & he spread peanut butter on it & a sliced banana plus syrup. And had it with a glass of milk. Then tells me a couple days later he doesn’t want to drink milk because he started gagging about an hour after breakfast. I asked him “Well I wonder why?” And told him he ate enough to feed at least two boys. So he laid off the PB & bananas on his waffles now. He’s not eating them every day only when he gets hungry for them.

@cherokeepatti Good for you...but get ready. When he hits his teens he will probably eat like 4 boys for a while...😉

@4meAndyou That’s a bit worrisome 😓

@cherokeepatti LOTS of filler. BIG pots of soup with veggies, cornbread with the soup...you will be able to handle it...no fear.
