I just had a kitchen disaster. What was your worst one?

I decided to make muffins.

I can't drink milk any longer, so I made the muffins with Rice Dream instead. I used cake flour (don't know how old it was...maybe more than two years?) because that is supposed to make the muffins more light and fluffy.

I was forced to use my really, really old baking powder, because I keep forgetting to buy new.

I used paper muffin cups so I would not have a mess to clean up. I put two cups of chocolate chips into the batter to make chocolate chip muffins. I used a Pillsbury recipe, and I followed directions exactly , and they should have come out fine....but they just suck.

The muffin batter glued itself to the muffin cups. The paper on the bottom has turned to cement, and the only way to get it off is to cut it off with a steak knife. I don't have any idea how that happened.

The muffins themselves are dense like gnocchi with chocolate chips, and the outside of the tops of the muffins is actually hard and crunchy and the outside chocolate chips turned to...chocolate powder.

AND I made two dozen so I could freeze them....LOL!!!馃槣

That's funny and sad. 馃槃

I think you got unlucky with all the old food.
If you don't have a viable/fresh rising agent when you bake, you'll have this kind of a situation.

I think it's probably a good thing dear: It could have caused you food poisoning.

Oh sure, I have had a few disasters.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Yes, I really HAVE to remember to buy baking powder! 馃槀
@4meAndyou Sometimes they ask for half baking soda and half baking powder. I think I am out of baking soda.

Haven't been doing much of gluten free baking actually. I used to bake all the time, back when we ate that sht...馃馃ェ馃嵃 YUM 馃構

My specialties are home made crepes, waffles, I also made an incredible Trifle (but that was really expensive, so I've not baked that in over a decade ) and incredible Birthday Cakes for my beloved. Actually I have baked a few GF ones and they turned out very well, were very beautiful. I use fondant and chocolate for decorating, I don't use icing for frosting, it is too sweet.

When I baked one for my dad; it was a fishing scene and I used the fish crackers, I put food colour on them (let them dry lol...that took a while)
I made a worm (who was sitting on a hook) from a gummy thing. Put beady cute but terrified eyes on it (you see, the fish were surrounding it, from both sides 馃槅 (hence the terror ;) !)...
And for the sea grass I used real parsley, the water in this was icing sugars in tubes by Wilson, blue hues. The hook was the decorating gel also by Wilson.
My Dad's cake was a huge success. NOT GF :D

I really miss baking for the family. It was tasty and such comfort food!
GF is just not the same but, I probably need to adapt, don't I :)

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I have to go dairy free, so I know how difficult it can be.
@4meAndyou Actually, and ideally so do we. It is BAD and hard. And I hate it.
What to eat: SAW DUST?...馃槼馃槓馃槪馃槱馃槶...

But seriously, yeah. If you have any GF and lactose free and soy free recipes, I'd love them :)
4meAndyouF
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON So far all I make that is BOTH GF and dairy free is pancakes using GF mix and rice dream.
@4meAndyou I am the same. I use the coconut milk, it's my fav :D
4meAndyouF
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Expensive, though, if you use milk a lot. The rice dream tastes great, is easily digestible, and is not too expensive for a quart.
@4meAndyou Rice milk for us costs the same as coconut milk. I know coconut water is super expensive...
I mean it's in the fridge along with Soy milk, cow milk, etc.
4meAndyouF
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON The rice milk is shelf stable till opened.
@4meAndyou Yes. Now I remember that from our health food store.
I used to buy soy, until I read how bad it is.
