Surprise! Yesterday was a holiday.
Yesterday, Monday was the day to check our PO Box. The box areas at the post office is accessible 24/7. The rest of the post office has business hours and closed on Sundays and holidays.
Standing at the door of that part of the post office were a half-dozen customers holding ready to be mailed packages, scratching their head and exchanging "what the....???" comments. I broke the news: "Today is Juneteenth, a federal holiday. The post office is closed today." I knew that because our bank had posted the notice on their front door about Juneteenth being a banking holiday. Banking holidays and post office holidays are always one and the same.
A few in he crowd said "oh yea, now I remember". A few said "Ohh shit!" A few ran to the post office Kiosk machine. I hoped they realized that using that machine to mail a package first required a semester long class at the local junior college. And even with that training, if you are in line to use that machine with two people in front of you, you may be there all day.
I took our mail to the car for sorting and watched a steady stream of people with packages enter the post office front door, and seconds later walk back out, still holding their package.
I like the idea of Juneteenth being a holiday. Why did it come as such a surprise?
