One of the more popular discussions brought up around the United States is student loans, student debt, college tuition, etc and of it should be free as it would be paid for by tax payers.

Some say yes, college should be absolutely free.

Some say no as perusing high education isn’t a necessary feature for financial success.

Some with a moderate so so believe that those majoring in degrees that indefinitely benefit society should have their college paid for so long as they stick with a career that pertains to their major for a few years after graduating.

Majors in fields such as Engineering, Health Care, Science, etc would be deemed acceptable.

However, degrees that don’t benefit society in a demand should not be covered, such as liberal arts.

What are your thoughts? Should college be free? Should it not? Or should there be requirements and stipulations to having your college career paid for?
Fuck no.. tax payer didn’t co-sign anything..
Will the banks forgive everyones mortgage they willingly signed into?
Will all those who have paid in full be reimbursed?

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout THAT PART you took out the loan you pay it back. what's next? they'll be wanting to excuse mortgages 🤔

The problem with American education beyond High School is that folks wishing to be seen as 'Middle-Class' regard it as 'essential' and those from poorer economic backgrounds probably aren't even considering university because of the costs involved.

Then you get into the business of what a college course actually involves.
If we were talking Classroom; Students; Lecturer; Textbooks four or five days a week that would be one thing.
But enrolling Students into courses where they never SEE a tutor and are expected to effectively 'educate themselves' via 'e-mail written instruction' while continuing to pay university fees. THAT is a con ! And should stop !

Actually that goes for the UK too !

As to whether one field of study is any more 'worthy' than another...... There you just get into a mess !

I have no idea what a 'Web Wizard' does or whether 'it' is essential to everyday life !
But if 'Web Wizard wannabe can get government funding for his course, why shouldn't there be courses for those in 'blue collar industries' like Retail sales/Management/project Management/Care industry/Construction...... ?
Why shouldn't working class kids get a crack at college life too ?

As to the costs, well, most first world nations have some sort of deferment system. Pay the exam fees yearly then the educational course costs post graduation over a period of time.

But even then, this is how some colleges get a bad rep. because their graduates are seen as 'lesser' than the exact same course and degree grads from a more 'prestigious' school of learning.

@Picklebobble2 well if they can afford parties and spring break why can't they honor their loan agreements
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@MarineBob Oh loans are a different thing altogether !
Student loans are the biggest con ever devised by government !

Wasn't that long ago when Bursaries and grants were what 'put food on the table' as you were learning.
Then they handed the whole thing over to private firms who use it to screw ten times the money borrowed while at college AFTER the event.

Thereby deliberately ensuring only the wealthiest could realistically afford to go
Nope- we’re attacking the wrong thing. It’s not about why people can’t pay for their own tuition, but more so why colleges keep getting more and more expensive! People should be prepared to pay for their tuition- it builds character, provides a foundation for a good work ethic and forces responsibility. Now that’s all great- if the price of your student loan is manageable. I know someone with $99k in debt for a bachelors. Why!?

It would be helpful if the interest could be waived for a period of time due to a hardship based on pre-approval of certain criteria until they become stable enough to start repaying. That and it not affect your credit.

@DecafD No telling how much money goes into the pockets of the presidents and administrators. Every new building built has the potential for dark money to be made.
@cherokeepatti I know exactly what you’re talking about. It used to be 100% covered under student aid and nowadays the student aid only covers a meager portion of what you owe. So now that forces a student to apply for grants and search for loans, which, let’s be honest, kids that age don’t know about the various types of loans and just pick the one that guarantees the full amount. That’s a lot of stress for a kid that 1. Just left home for the first time 2. Is acclimating to a college lifestyle and 3. Has to worry about keeping up the grades as well. Not to mention that all of this has to be done a month or 2 prior to the next semester so this kind of worry could def ruin someone’s final grade for fall.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@DecafD They can start searching for scholarships and grants while they are in high school, so many categories that may apply to them and not many other students that some students get a handful of smaller scholarships and one or two larger ones.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
No, taxpayers already paid theirs and then have to work to pay more taxes to bail out the younger ones. How about they choose a major that pays enough to pay their loan debt. Something to think about. Liberal arts doesn’t pay as much as engineering and business degrees.
@cherokeepatti I chose to go into esthetics (which I can hardly afford) because I couldn’t afford to go to med school to be a dermatologist. Even the well paying jobs put you in an outrageous amount of a debt lol

Education for the nation is not an expense. It is an asset. Therefore I take the view that while overseas students who come to study in my country should pay for that education, the citizens of my country who are studying in fields useful to my country should receive there education at the national expense. So Doctors, nurses, engineering teachers and science graduates should not pay.
In the other hand. It you want to study philosphy or Egyptology........Not so much. The idea is to make a direct contribution to the development of the nation..😷

I guess the answer to that could be found in the results from the 25 or so other major nations that offer free college education. But most of those countries also view health care as a right. We survive by having an under-educated and unhealthy country. That could change but we have political and corporate influences that prefer it just the way it is.
Sure. From the way I see it, most students already pay into the tax system (most have jobs. Some are older students like myself, who pay property tax as well). Either tax me less or actually have my taxes benefit me in a way I choose. 🤷‍♀️
MarineBob · 56-60, M
I have no problem forgiving student loans if they are current on the payments, working in their field of study, and have completed some time in local state or national service not including politics
DDaverde · 61-69, M
The students with the loans should pay them. taxpayer why should I ?
I payed my loans off after collage..
Ynotisay · M
@DDaverde And would it have been better for you to not have those loans to repay in the first place?
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
It shouldn’t be forgiven. It’s not my job to make sure people have careers.
sassypants · 36-40, F
No because there are other programs that they need to focus on. Healthcare, homeless veterans, Education for our children and a meal program at schools for those who cannot afford it. If you took the loan then you alone are responsible. If they achieved a higher degree then they have higher earnings to pay it back.
Rickg · 31-35, M
I disagree
And there should be less of an emphasis on having to have a degree level education
As most jobs don’t require it
Ynotisay · M
@Rickg It would also apply to trade schools though.
Rickg · 31-35, M
Yea, but there is less of an investment of time and money, and also paid apprenticeships
So there would be much less of a problem of student debt @Ynotisay
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
Gotta look out for #1, after I'm forgiven they can have their forgiveness...that's what I say.
theAlchemist · 56-60, M
Absolutely not.
I think there's a lot of truth to what you say. Education is a benefit to everyone, but some much more than others. I have a hard time backing up all these disciplines that just don't turn into jobs
