Life insurance - yes or no ? Funeral insurance - yes or no ?

I have neither because I don't see they are necessary and are basically a commercial scam designed to generate massive profit by exploiting fear.

Curious about your views?

I'm an actuary. Life insurance is good if you have a need for it, but not so good if you don't. Do you have family members who would go hungry if you died today? Get some damn life insurance to protect them in that unfortunate scenario. If you have enough money to support your family after your death -- or if you have no dependents -- then you may as well go without. Well, also you'll need some funds to cover your funeral, but that's relatively ancillary.

But yeah, think of it like Many Worlds Theory; in some universes, you die soon and in some you don't. Life insurance is basically just a way to take money from you in the universes where you don't die and transport it to the universes where you do -- where that money is more urgently needed.

I had life insurance while my wife was alive and we had a mortgage to ensure that she would be provided for in the event of my death. But now I have no dependents so I don't have any such insurance any more. And I am well enough of for my children to be able to pay for the funeral out of my estate so I don't have funeral insurance.

Perhaps funeral insurance makes some sort of sense for poor people who have trouble getting a substantial lump sum together in a hurry. Knowing that it is already paid for would take some of the stress out of an already difficult time.

Personally I think buying a permanent (whole life) level premium insurance policy when you are young and healthy is smart. The older you get, the more expensive it gets. I envisioned, when I was young (20's) that at some point I would have responsibilities to others as time went on (children and/or spouse), and I thought it smart to get into life insurance when I could get a half million coverage that fit in my budget.

I still have that and a lifetime survivor benefit program that will pay out 50% of my monthly gross income for any eligible survivor(s) for as long as they live... which was good because I have a permanently disabled stepdaughter and I'm glad I know she will be the beneficiary.

For me it meant no matter what, I would go to my grave knowing those I loved and cared about were taken care of. Money doesn't and never has meant a whole lot to me other than wanting to have enough to take care of those I love.

If you are on in years and have nobody you are responsible for or love and care about, it makes zero sense to have life insurance other than a burial expense plan.

I have life insurance. it's important to me so that if I die, my mortgage is paid and my kids have nothing to worry about. I"ve never heard of funeral insurance. what is it?

@Jenny1234 As of now, Frankly speaking, I don't like the idea of any type of insurances. Just live as the day passes by. Everything will be taken care of. But people, because of their anxiety and unpredictable future happen to be the part of all the insurance games.

@SW-User if you don't have dependents then you really don't need it. I have five kids. I need it
SW-User
@Jenny1234 Then ofcourse, you need it.
Where are you from if you don't mind?

I don't own a house and I view life insurance basically as hardcore commercial scam built around fear (same way people were sucked into getting jabbed for Covid).
