. Jitu Munda, 52, from the Indian state of Odisha, was captured on video carrying the remains of his recently deceased sister through the streets of Keonjhar and placing them outside the local bank.

Munda said he had exhumed her remains out of frustration, as bank officers repeatedly refused to let him withdraw the money left in her account without official proof of death.

When I was a caseworker at the Dept of Welfare, clients in two separate households made a baby. They called me from the hospital to make the glad announcement. I told them to bring in the birth certificate and I could add the baby to their record.

They raised my birth certificate one real baby. They brought Emily in as proof. Of course, an actual baby is not proof. I completely understood their reasoning, but bureaucracies are not about reasoning. They’re about paper.

I told my boss. “So I put baby Emily on the copy machine and now we’ve got paper.”

He was unnerved. “You put the baby on the copier?”

No, Dave. I did not put the baby on the copier. That would make too much sense.
