Should couples have joint bank accounts or keep finances separate?

There's no 'one size fits all' answer here. My wife & I have been happily married for over 25 years. We have always kept separate bank accounts and separate credit cards. For us, we feel that the lack of friction over minor spending is great, but we have similar spending habits.

Also, in the event that one spouse dies suddenly, the other still has access to their own bank account to pay bills, buy groceries, etc.
