What is the cause of IPO's being overvalued and then sinking like a rock at opening bell?

its usually because the firm making money from the IPO does dodgy things to the balance sheet. Like doing a massive writeoff of inventory and then selling the inventory at a discount. It makes sales look awesome for about a year which looks good in a prospectus. There are numerous tricks.
