Ring camera doorbells. Dumbest invention ever.

Absolutely no benefits to the owner. Increased anxiety, increased emotional workload, increased risk of domestic abuse, increased fear of the outside world.

If your doorbell is giving you anxiety, change the tune to something soothing.
How else are you supposed to hear someone at the door? 馃槄

@SW-User doorbells are fine. I'm talking about the RING ones with a camera on, every time someone comes near your house it switches on the camera and alerts your phone so you can watch who is outside your house.

@OhIsMe ohh those. Nest or something like that. All my family have some form of it. Lol. I think some of them have disabled the ring because it annoys them.
No way to circumvent them? There is usually a way
@OhIsMe Of course what was I thinking. I just can鈥檛 imagine a world where a camera doorbell kept me from doing what I wanted.
OhIsMe36-40, M
@Notladylike I think it's a slow burn. You start out independent and making your own choices, then the situation slowly changes you because you're trying to avoid any conflict.
@OhIsMe Yeah I can imagine it eats away at you over time I guess.
So how else should a visitor get your attention? Would it make you less anxious if they bang on your door?
OhIsMe36-40, M
@LowBorn I'm happy that you don't know what the Ring camera doorbells are. This pleases me.
@OhIsMe I do know what they are.

They鈥檙e stupid and only stupid people have them
OhIsMe36-40, M
@GLITTER lol I literally said this to her, that I'd turn up in a mask and a baseball cap with a KFC and be like "hello I'm your deliveroo" but I think usually they don't do hugs or go inside.

@OhIsMe we鈥檒l unfortunately there was a problem with the payment 馃槵

Ive read through this post.
I personally think that if someone is as controlling as this, they needn't have a ring doorbell. They will find other ways.

I'm curious as to how it increases domestic abuse
OhIsMe36-40, M
@deadgerbil see below

@OhIsMe I just read it. It's a piece of technology that is open to misuse

For me, I go for runs in the middle of the night so I'd probably be questioned all the time by family about why I'm going so late. That would be the extent of it for me as I'm already dismissive of questions that I deem to be annoying. I can't relate to the situation of having to answer to a toxic spouse, and that would sound like a hostage situation. That behavior will be nipped in the bud as soon as it arises.

And because of me not having those problems, I'd be able to fully enjoy camera footage of any porch pirates stealing stuff from me

*rings your doorbell 25times*
You don鈥檛 think it might be an advantage to be able to at least call the cops, or if you鈥檙e cowboy have a gun waiting for someone who might be casing your house ?
OhIsMe36-40, M
@bijouxbroussard no, we already have big doors and phones 馃槶

Increased risk of domestic abuse? How?
OhIsMe36-40, M
@InOtterWords you're feeling trapped at home and want to talk to someone about it, so you invite a friend over. As she arrives your phone rings and it's him

"Why is she over? I don't like her. Why didn't you tell me she was coming. I'm coming home she's a bad influence on you"

You decide the next day to go out to visit someone, your phone rings

"Where are you going?"

You decide to leave in the middle of the night while he's asleep so you can avoid his temper, you open the door quietly so as not to wake him, but then you hear the notification on his phone as the doorbell camera informs him someone is by the front door.

Add landline phones in 2022
OhIsMe36-40, M
@DDonde these are now totally useless for 75% of the population, but at least they can't be used as coercive control.
