Why Do Paddled Schoolgirls Make The Media?
Okay, folks. You see it here in Similar Worlds. You read it in the papers. You see it on the television news. Paddling is alive and well in most Southern US schools. Sure, you expect the boys to get it because they tend to get in more trouble, right? But girls get it too, right along with the boys. Except when girls get swats it usually hits the papers!
Now this is what I can't figure out. We all get spanked on the butt. Boys' butts and girls' butts are pretty much the same. They consist of two symmetrical cheeks (I hope they do!). They have to bend over to take the paddle. So do we. It hurts the same for both boys and girls. I admit that our butts may be a bit softer and rounder, but I think the difference ends there. However, when the story hits the media, the boy's paddling is mentioned in passing, but the girl's paddling goes into lurid detail.
Recently I posted a story about the tentatively final girls to be caned in England. The Rodney School was known for its strict but fair policy, including getting the cane for infractions. In a nutshell, five girls were caught sneaking into the boys' dorm and got caught. Their punishment was expulsion or caning. They all chose the cane. The story hit the papers! Now remember, the boys were caned too. But the media focused on the fact that five pre-teen girls were caned. They were interviewed, there were pictures, and the girls got a big write-up. As an afterthought, most of the articles mentioned that the boys got it too.
Many of you may be familiar with the short-lived television show, The Principal's Office. One Arkansas school featured on the show had the paddle, and it was used on several students who were lined up in the hall. But people saw only one feature--one of the recipients of the spanking paddle was a girl. Nobody was actually shown getting paddled, but you sure could hear it behind the closed door of the office! When I heard the sounds of the boy getting "The Big Three" I broke down and cried so much that my husband had to turn off the TV. Those sounds brought back memories of my own paddling, and I couldn't stand to watch. But then the girl got paddled, and I was much better composed. However, Nancy Guillen, the victim, really made people sit up and take notice of the fact that schools not only were still spanking students, but that they were paddling girls! The video became a sensation on YouTube, Nancy was interviewed for a news story, and next year she was elected Senior class president. I can't say if her paddled butt had any influence on the election process, but it may have helped. Very little mention was made of Shorty, the boy who really sounded like he was being sent through the roof, judging by the sound of the swats and the intensity of his hollering. The girl got most of the attention.
Another story that made the media was that of Amber Page, the Texas cheerleader who was caught smoking on school grounds. I feel especially sorry for her because she received some very harsh punishments: She was kicked off the squad so that she could no longer cheer, an activity she loved and for which she was given trophies, a One hundred and thirty-dollar fine for having tobacco on the person of a minor, and last but not least, three whacks of the big school paddle. I'm especially annoyed by the way it was done. She reported for paddling the following day, and was told, "No, not today."
She went through this routine for a few days until she felt they may have forgotten about it. Two weeks later she showed up at school in a denim miniskirt and bare legs. Guess what? That was the day! Maybe it was coincidence, but I think monkey business was afoot in that they were waiting for her to show up in a short skirt, just perfect for bending over in, before they called her in for swats. Naturally the story made the media. Amber said she really didn't mind the spanks, which had been cut down from three to two, but that being thrown off the cheerleading squad hurt her a lot more than any paddling. I think it's an interesting footnote that Amber became a teacher,and has recently been promoted to Assistant Principal, so now it's her turn to paddle misbehaving students.
Sometimes the parents are the ones who alert the media because of their squawks of outrage against corporal punishment. Case in point is Taylor Santos, who was paddled by her male vice-principal instead of by a woman. Her mom described her daughter's butt as "fire engine red" and decorated with welts and bruises. Well guess what? It's called a paddling. If her rear end didn't look like that, someone was not doing his job. However, the media interviewed the girl and her mom, it was put on the TV news, and a big fuss was made of it.
In my area of Upstate New York, paddling was in full force at all our local schools, and girls got it as well as boys. However, it seemed to be so routine that nobody made such a fuss over it that our stories appeared in the papers, or even made a sensation within the school. I know not too many people knew about my paddling, except for the fact that I returned to the classroom with tears in my eyes after visiting the principal's office. Now that was a giveaway. But my point is that it hardly made a ripple--except that boys now wanted to date me, whereas before the incident they called me names in the hall. So again, there is something about a girl getting the paddle that seems different, even though a boy would have gotten the same and very little notice made of it.
Yeah, I know about the sexual implications, and the turn-ons by guys who create mental images of what happened to me in the office. One guy asked me, "Did it get you hot?" To which I replied, "Only my skirt."
So what is it about girls that their paddlings make media sensations, whereas boys--well, not so much? The result for both should be fairly equal--IT HURTS!

In the early 1980's there was an incident concerning the homecoming festivities at an Oklahoma school. The homecoming queen, Frankie Mass, and the king, Forrest Kirkes, were introduced at the football game in front of the school body, faculty and guests. One silly rule was that the king and queen were not allowed to kiss. However, the students egged them on with chants of "Kiss her! Kiss her!" in the presence of a very annoyed principal. Frankie said to her escort, "Well, Forrest--see you Monday morning!"--knowing that both of them were going to get spanked. They kissed, and they both went before the principal on Monday.
