I Have Worn Women's Shoes

Making Friends at Payless...

Don't be afraid guys..."TRY THEM ON" Those are the three magical words my favorite sales associate, Maribel told me in 2010, and they still ring true four and a half years later. To this day she remains a great friend. The sales associates at Payless will appreciate you (especially since you're generating sales for them) and the "softer" male image you project. In case you haven't noticed, 90% of all Payless associates are women! This fact will make it easier for you. When meeting new associates, I usually point out the fact that I love ladies flats. I visited two stores on Friday, and at the first store she said "Don't worry about it--you're good" in a totally nonchalant manner. When I got to the second store, I found an attractive woman in her 30's who had a lot of tattoos. When I told her why I was in the ladies section, she told me "Hey! that's perfectly fine--it's a new word today" She then went on to elaborate that her son, who is 17 wears heels all the time! She explained that he wasn't gay or a cross dresser, just a regular teenager with a preference for heels. According to her, he is a big hit at school, and he is rarely teased. But she did put three conditions on him: One, he can't wear them to school (too distracting she says) Two, he must buy his own heels (with money raised from chores or part-time jobs) and Three, he can't wear her heels! (He's hard on heels and doesn't want hers ruined). At the time I visited the store, she says he hasn't been there yet. She's afraid when he eventually comes to the store, he'll blow his money on every heel in the store, especially with this BOGO sale going on!

The point I'm making here is that when you tell them you love flats, you not only break the ice with her, but you can get some great conversations with her. Such conversations lead to genuine friendship. Have you ever stood in line waiting for something and manage to have an interesting conversation with a total stranger? Of course you have--that's how friendships are made. Now when you repeatedly visit the store, you'll talk more about each other, and you will get to know more about how a Payless store operates, good and bad customers, and yes their views on men wearing ladies shoes, cross dressing in general and so much else. The important thing is this....YOU'RE MAKING FRIENDS! Friends that will support you passion for flats. Friends that can last a lifetime. Don't be surprised when they tell you there are other guys that come in looking for heels or flats. Remember, you're not the only one!

HINT: The best time to talk to her is when business is slow. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the best, especially with kids back in school.
This has been my experience as well. A sale is a sale. Salespeople are not there to cause you any issues or grief in your purchases. "The customer is always right." seems to continue in today's modern exchanges - perhaps even more so with better openness and acceptance. I've never been turned away, and never gotten more than an quick look from someone at the counter. In fact, for me, I find it rather exciting now to try on and then buy my shoes in the store. My latest pair of black patent flats I picked up at a local chain store, and am wearing as I type this reply.

The sales associates I have dealt with have all been helpful. I haven't tried Payless yet, I mostly shop DSW, Macy's and the brand stores (Cathy Jeans, Steve Madden, etc) and small independent stores in person and online I also include 6pm and ebay. In one shop the associates go out of their way to bring me shoes to try on (even when they are super busy) because they sell more shoes when I'm shopping (they tell me) and they know I like shoes, ultra high heels and wedges. When you walk into a shoe store with 5 inch high wedges, you don't need to tell them you like shoes. The only thing I would say is not to say it's strange, its different, new, but don't use the word strange, too negative.

Hmmm... I think you might have a point there.

Payless has been a friend of mine for at least 20 years. Affordable, cute, sexy shoes in sizes that men can wear. Love the availability of wide width.

You're right, wide width really helps...

I have a friend whose father-in-law sold women's shoes and had he has these great high heel stretchers. I borrowed them and they worked fine so I went online and found a pair of new high heel stretchers for myself. You just need to be careful you don't over do it and break the shoe. Another friend got a pair for both high heels and flats. It has made shoes that fit, fit even better.
@carsheelsandwomen , yes, but many women consider Payless the lowest quality of retail shoes available... as in “low end” shoes... but I always thought they were cute... and they at least have the larger sizes for men in women’s styles.

100% correct. When buying women's shoes for yourself, be honest, be yourself, be open and you will receive great service in return. I've made several great friends by trying on ballet flats in the store.

I feel a little shy about doing it. Are they really that nice?

My first outing to buy some women's shoes was at a shopping mall in Virginia. I was in guy mode and went in around dinner time on a weeknight when traffic was light.

I was looking at some heels when a sales lady come over to see if she could help. I said, "I kinda like this pair."

She asked me, "what size is she?"

I kinda gulped and said, "they're for me."

"Do you know your size?"

"Not really, the shoes I've purchased before are always too small."

I took off my shoe and sock to reveal the nylons I had on underneath and she measured my foot, went to the stockroom, and came back with three pairs that bracketed the size she measured.

We tried all three to find which one was closest. (Not all size 10 are created equal.). One we had a candidate size she had me take off my other shoe and put both heels on and walk around to see how they fit.

While walking around a couple of women came in the store. I was a bit panicky, but the sales lady steered then to different section of the store.

When they left, she came back to me and we decided that I would take them.

As she was ringing up the sale she said, "wear these on carpet for a few days, so you don't scuff the soles, and if they don't seem to work you can bring them back."

Needless to say they were perfect and to this day they are one of my favorite pair of heels.

Try it. You'll like it. And, if they give you any guff, just remember, they aren't the only shoe store in the territory and you are sure to find one willing to take you money.

I also had the pleasure of making friends with a Payless manager. She even let me come in and get her opinion on some outfits several times.

I haven't counted lately, but with the recent Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales at Payless.com, I believe I'm now at over 110 pairs.
