Explain 'cocktail attire' please ?

I know about cocktail dresses, but apparently there is a whole spectrum of deportment associated with it that I've never twigged with. I'm not a formal dressing person usually.

Apparently every woman has a LBD (little black dress) but does that 'fit' into 'cocktail wear'? I'm not sure it does as LBD's are for dressing slutty.

use a clutch shows you're refined
wear 1 accessory pearls are nice
wear heels
enjoy your party

I only possess three outfits.
1. Rugby/polo shirt and jeans
2. Suit, shirt and tie
3. My birthday suit

I'd pick one of them as appropriate to situation.

Weddings? I've never worn a suit/tie but over 30 yrs ago when I worked in retail I wore a tie. Never been to a wedding myself or any sort of formal function.
