What happened to the days when men wore suits as casual wear men in the 1950’s men in that era used to dress up in suits as every day apparel?

I suppose I grew up in a less formal area of the country. Unless a man was a minister, attorney, or doctor, he seldom wore a suit during the week. Suits were for church and events like weddings and funerals. Being in the south where air conditioning was rare might be a factor.
