Men can freeze their family jewels off in Oklahoma's winters when the wind comes sweeping down the plain....

When I was growing up here in Oklahoma in my city by the time you got to junior high you had to wear dresses or skirts if you were a girl. We had a protest when I was in 7th grade and I wore pants that day, got fed up with the cold winds blowing, if I wore a long skirt the wind would nearly knock me down and a short skirt I'd freeze...and it wasn't stylish then to wear pants under your dress or thick leggings. We got to wear pants after that.

@Elandra77 This was early 70's in Oklahoma. One of the boy's coaches made the remark that if girls got to wear pants they wouldn't act lady-like and I told him maybe the boys needs to wear skirts then to straighten them out, the little heathens.

@cherokeepatti I remember those days in school when the girls used to complain about wearing skirts (uniforms) on those cold windy days. Some even took to wearing pants underneath and removing them at school. When our daughter went to the same school they had changed to allow the girls to wear slacks when the weather got cold. I did see where there was a school where the guys took to wearing the girls skirts when they were refused the request to wear shorts in the hot weather.

@SageWanderer Didn't matter if it was cold or not, I liked to cover up more (this was back when skirts were either really short or maxi skirts) and almost got blown over by the wind once while walking with a maxi dress on.

@Elandra77 There was a math teacher who loved to tap the girls on the butt with a yardstick and say something cutesy to them when they walked by his classroom during class changes...I lost a lot of weight one summer and he did it to me one time and I was wearing a scooter skirt (shorts attached under a skirt) and I turned around and grabbed his yardstick and told him never to do that again. I hated wearing skirts because of that. He never touched me again and I was going to snap that yardstick in two if he ever did.

@Elandra77 Surprising how many girls would just giggle and laugh at him and scoot away when he did that though. I think I might have been the only one who challenged him on it. If he'd done it again I would have gotten loud and ugly, don't mind making a scene when someone is being an ass.

@Elandra77 Most of them were cheerleaders and pep squad girls...I don't know if they would react the same way today or not. I thought it was demeaning.

@Elandra77 On the other hand he was mean to the boys in his class, my stomach started hurting so much I thought I'd get an ulcer from it. The boys in my class that year were mostly honor students and really nice guys. One had a pencil roll off his desk and this jerk teacher yelled at him. The next day I went to the counselor and got out of his class because of it. I cannot bear to watch someone act that way to any group....he patronized the girls and was mean to the boys.

@cherokeepatti i wore scooter skirts too!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart I lost a lot of weight before 9th grade so I got patterns and made two different styles, didn't take much fabric (which was cheaper to sew back then than buy new clothes) and had a lot of cute outfits. I sewed quite a few outfits before school started and had a brand new wardrobe, think I bought some jeans, pantsets, jacket and shoes to go with them.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti wow...that is he way to go. i sew lots but i didn't like what i made myself..
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart I made long vests which were in style then, pants, jackets later on (hated to sew anything with lapels), skirts, a couple of maxi dresses, some blouses, etc. I liked what I made.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti did you make the bell bottom pants. we crocheted the vests and ponchos.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart Oh I had a pattern for those long wide-pants, what were they called...they almost looked like a long skirt...really pretty sewed from brilliant border prints. I embroidered my jeans.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti palazzo pants but mine were bell bottomed...and i had the embroidered trim on my jeans too.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart yes they were called palazzo pants.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti we are from the same era...don't you think?
