A while back
I was talking with a friend about Neil Gaiman. I had just read his eulogy for Maurice Sendak and was extremely upset that Gaiman had made it all about himself and literally nothing about Sendak in the 30 minutes he talked. The only thing he said about Sendak was how he was a childhood favorite. I thought then that Gaiman was a righteous piece of shit.
A few years later, I was talking to the same friend about Rowling. This time, I was wondering why anyone was consulting her as an "expert" on mythology and folklore. She had just written a series of YA books that had s9me mythos in it, not written a thesis on the subject. She was far from an expert. At that point, I found distaste for her, presenting herself as an expert in a topic she hadn't really proven she knew.
I read Noam Chomsky in my first year of college. Not gonna lie, I hated reading it. The pompous way in which he wrote,as if he was the only one with "true knowledge" on the guerilla warfare in the Congo was pretty infuriating. While I understood he was a professor, I was not exceptionally glad to be talked down to in his book.
I mention these things because I had a strong distaste for them before they ever became distasteful. I saw their gross and what I would consider self important narcissistic behaviors long before anyone else did. I was often told I was just being unreasonable.
But all three have fallen from their heights due to their own actions, Chomsky the most recent victim of his own hubris by being photographed with Epstein on Epstein's jet.
When people who have experienced narcissism say, "That person is someone you need to watch out for." believe them. They have seen these behaviors before. They won't put them up on a pedestal, but on the ground where they belong. With the riffraff and degenerates.
