Every occasion that famous or rich people go to...is followed by a barrage of pics showing us what they were wearing...

How about giving that money to charity and not spending $10,000 on the apparel when you could just go to Macy's and spend $500 on a gorgeous gown and call it a day? Sheesh! Just because it has someone else's name on it ? REALLY?

On the other hand, that 10 000 dollar dress might be auctioned for 30-50 000 $ just because it has someone else's name AND it was worn by someone famous to some event, making it unique., and that auctioned money can go to charity.
@kayoshin i wish i lived in your world where a gown is auctioned and you believe that money goes to some poor starving child. I really wish that this was how it actually worked...but it doesn't

@DIABLISS My point wasn't that it goes like that for every outfit, my point was about value. And value is what your post is really about. Your post suggests that the value is wrongly assigned and that the money could go to kids, while I showed that the value of the dress is not the problem in that context since IF they chose to they can actually do more for the kids by wearing the overpriced clothes.

It's a choice. A choice few make, but it's there.

So you missed my point, it wasn't that all waste of money is good, my point was it's that not all money that seems wasted at first glance is inherently a bad thing, if you see the potential and use it it CAN be more useful than if the expense was spared.
@kayoshin They shouldn't act like this and the dresses shouldn't be worth more because some idiot wore it and the money that it makes being auctioned does not go to charity

@DIABLISS if they shouldn't act like that people shouldn't reward them. But they do. And by people I don't mean the big shots who organise the events but the people who watch the events.
The fact that we show more interest in famous people in fancy clothes than in inventors, doctors and so on, gives the former more value than the latter, so it is what it is.
@kayoshin true....but it shouldn't be that way. How stupid are we as a society that we show more interest in what some square jawed imitator is eating for lunch more than the brilliant scientist that he is portraying?

@DIABLISS it's more of a imediate gratification over long term goal thing. We can have something that makes us feel good right now or invest in something that makes us good in the long run or future generations. We're not that stupid, just selfish and shortsighted.
