I remember listening to my youngest sister having a discussion with a white friend over a box of crayons.
(they were about six)

He: You’re black, I’m white. It’s simple.
She: It’s wrong. Is my skin the same color as this black crayon ?
He: Well, no.
She: And is your skin the same color as the white crayon ?
He: No, but it is the same color as the "flesh" crayon.
She: Mine isn’t. Don’t I have flesh, too ?
He: Yes, but…
She: Not so simple, is it ?
