Weird question for those with small children…

Do you let them sleep in your bed on a regular basis ? Were you allowed to sleep in your parents’ bed as a child ?

One thing I noticed with my close friends who are a couple is that while their three children all had their own beds, until they were well into school age they also had the option of sharing the "family bed" on occasion.

Often "family night" would mean making popcorn and piling into the bed, a huge California King, to watch a movie on their big flatscreen tv set on the bedroom wall.

Various times when I visited I was invited to sit on the bed (and there was plenty of room) to watch the movie.

The children would invite me to sleep there afterwards, but I would excuse myself and go sleep on a futon in another room.

The tradition was less a feature of her Irish upbringing and more a habit her husband grew up with, as one of six kids.

I don’t remember having done that as a child or seeing my siblings do it, but I did get to ask my mother why we never slept in their bed. She replied that there was no need; we all slept through the night, and if someone was having a nightmare she or Pop would come and sit with us until we went back to sleep. I later did that for the youngest sister.

Not my siblings and I slept in our own beds, and so did my children. Now on those movie nights I would let my son and daughter to build a pillow fort on the floor with blankets and lay there with then to watch a movie they chose, brushing teeth after popcorn and snuggling back into the fort. Once the kids fell asleep, I took them to their own beds and then I went to my bed.
