How were you disciplined growing up?

@beckychandler What about your dad? Did he spank you as well?

@Crazychick I was disciplined by both parents, but Mom pretty much dished out the punishments (none of this "wait until your father gets home" stuff I hear about). The few times I was spanked by Dad it was with a belt, but not bare bottom (thank goodness!).

@Crazychick Mom's hand, her hairbrush and wooden spoons were the worst my tender bare rear had to endure 😭

@beckychandler I was never spanked with a wooden spoon. I had the hairbrush a few times.

@beckychandler My mom could never bring herself to use a belt. My dad was the one who handed out the belt whoopings when my siblings and I reached a certain age.

@SW-User My mum wasn't incapable of using a belt, it just wasn't her usual go-to implement. My mum's main implements were slipper and hairbrush, my dad's were belt and slipper.

@SW-User That's something I thankfully never had. I think that is abuse.

@SW-User My Mom did that once to me. And it was more humiliating than all of the spankings she dished out --combined. And it also made me angry. It is something I have sworn, as a Mom, never to do (though I realize how tempting it can be with a kid with a smart mouth talking back -- usually older).

@beckychandler As I said above, I could never physically hit one of my kids if I had any. No way.

My mother liked to do that. She was erratic and unpredictable; I never saw it coming. She was the director of a nursery school who gave parenting seminars. She told the parents to never do that to a child because it was too demeaning. All the parents at the school thought she was a saint. Truly crazymaking.

@Crazychick My mother had an entire career as an advocate of gentle sensitive child rearing. She even lectured about never, ever shouting at your children or intimidating them, something she did to me daily. She was incredibly emotionally abusive as well. I believe many people in her social world were aware of it but were very afraid of her. I believe that my mother could, and did, have people killed; she was a member of a secret society located within the old Communist Party (in the USA, 1921-1989).

So you are right, she was a hypocrite...And a whole lot more as well. Her role as a "parenting expert" was only one facet of an elite deviant life.

@greenmountaingal I couldn't have respected her for that. Hypocrisy is frowned on where I come from, not respected.

@Crazychick Her friends regarded it as appropriate secrecy done for security reasons. I, of course, do not respect this kind of behavior.
