Because they don't want to feel trapped, they want to be able to do things with other people and not have to be reduced to cheating for it.
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
If that's the case then stay by yourself and do what you want, when you want...
Jazzyloves13 · 31-35, F
exactly, but there is other reasons as to be a couple, say you do not want to lose that person because they are special to you, the relationship is what keeps you together and being open about it ensures they keep coming back to you
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
Being open about it is no guarantee that they'll keep coming back to you...it just means they have someone to go back to when they're done with the other person....
Jazzyloves13 · 31-35, F
which both parties are able to do. Its really complicated to put into words but a lot of relationships cant handle it and there are the few that actually work out. Its neither a bad nor good thing, just a choice and work
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
Of course most of these relationships don't work out... one on one relationships are hard enough, and bringing someone else into it makes it that much harder... I don't know anyone who wants to share their significant other with someone else... those relationships are inherently unstable and lead to a lot of emotional and psychological damage when it's all over...
Jazzyloves13 · 31-35, F
like I said there are the few that do work, there is nothing wrong with having sex with other people and as threesomes do exist it is quite normal to have them with their significant other
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
I thought we were talking about long term relationships; threesomes don't fall in that category...
Jazzyloves13 · 31-35, F
they do if the relationship has lasted a long time and you constantly have threesomes with other people. Open relationships don't mean a couple and the same people all the time, it could be a variety of one night stands
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
Define "long time"...and if people are constantly having threesomes and a variety of one night stands, does that not indicate that there is something terribly wrong?
Jazzyloves13 · 31-35, F
years. and no not really, its only natural to want to have sex with others, its just who we are as people
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
I disagree with you there...I think most people prefer a long term relationship than going from one person to the next most of their lives... society would crumble if everyone followed this pattern... there's no stability or security in transitory relationships...
Jazzyloves13 · 31-35, F
actually that falls on the person, there are many people who follow this pattern, those who cheat etc. in fact there are swingers because that's their way of doing it without bad intentions. End of the day it falls on the couple themselves, if they see no reason to have sex with others they wont, if they do, theyre either vocal about it, unhappy, or cheat, so why not just be open, at least its honest
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
I'm sorry, but if someone is so special to someone else why go looking outside that relationship? Someone always gets hurt....no one ever talks about that...you can't tell me that people don't suffer from such behavior unless they've convinced themselves that it's all okay...
VioletRayne · 36-40, F
This was a good discussion on the topic. I kinda agree with you both. I don't really think a relationship like that can work unless both parties are so damaged that they kind of accept that no one will be faithful to them and this is the closest they can come to having that Agape Love. @Alien-Zipper:
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
I guess I am selfish, but I wouldn't want to share my significant other with anyone...
VioletRayne · 36-40, F
There's nothing selfish about that. I feel people are greedy. I don't even want anyone else when I'm in love. I don't look elsewhere. People confuse caring with love. I think the Greeks had it right to separate and define love. We shouldn't have one blanket word. Just because you care for someone and find them sexually attractive doesn't mean you love them. Agape love requires a sacrifice. If you don't want to give up all others for that person then you don't love them. If you loved them you would be so focused on their desires and happiness that you wouldn't have time to even look elsewhere. The beauty of it all comes in when they are similarly focused on you. @Alien-Zipper:

Exactly.. well said... thank you...

@VioletRayne: Beautifully put. Best comment of the thread but sadly buried in the third segment.
