Babysitting

I’m babysitting two 7 yr olds and a 4 yr old for probably six hours tonight. Their parents said I could name my price. What should I charge? I don’t wanna go too high or they’ll never hire me again or too low cause then they’ll expect that rate again. Any ideas?
Yes I know this is after your evening, but a few ideas for the future.

1) You need to spot check your competition for things like this and present it as market research. It will impress them that you have done your homework.

2) A moderate/reasonable price gives them room to feel good about being more generous by rounding up or otherwise tipping.

3) BE SMART. Do not go against their rules, bc you work for them, you speak for them and are their eyes and ears. If you can be pleasant but firm in keeping their absolute MUSTs/MUST NOTs intact...then you will earn respect and trust and repeat bus. and references. 😊

$75 on up because your feeding them probably and cleaning up after them. Do the dishes . A little housework. That’s reasonable. That’s how much I charge and I usually get a c-note every time ($100) . That’s a decent price if you ask me for 3’kids

Thanks everybody! I think I’ll just go with $100 which honestly seems like a ton of money but whatever lol.

Thanks for the responses!!
Good luck with it.

@Gatorgirl how did it go?

If you are having fun and didn't have to cook - $10 an hour.

Same as above, but had to cook - but not clean the house - $12 an hour.

Same as above and you really nailed it by cleaning the areas of the house you had polite access to = $15 an hour.

@CZarr These parents had better be very well off.
What's your min wage there?
If you do $12 an hr that's approx $84 for the 7 hrs.
@Serenitree that's true. Again it was just a rough estimate. 🤷 I read it wrong anyways. I put it for 7 hrs and it's only 6 😂

@StayGold sometimes 6 hours can feel like seven... 😂
@Ryanoliver2011 😂 very good point!

From what time to what time? What will you have to do? Bathe them? Get them ready for bed? Feed them? Or will they already be in bed sleeping. Charge more per hour for actively caring for them and less per hour during sleep time.

My daughter last time she babysat (in Fla) was getting $15/hour for two kids and that was 2013

Minimum wage is my suggestion. They might offer more than you ask.

I'd say you could easily charge $10/hr

I'd be sure to have all,the expectations agreed upon before the parents leave. Ask them what you have to do. Tell them what you expect to be paid for those duties, and if they object, ask them what they consider reasonable. Then you come to a conclusion...all before you start.

Don't go by the minimum wage. It is much more of a flat rate. I only know this from my students (usually female) telling me this.
