My Mother's Generation of Women

My older female relatives always dressed up, did their hair, matched their outfits beautifully, and wore jewelry.
My mother especially liked pins and I have many of them.
I remember her and my aunt's they always looked so put together and very charming.

My mother was a lady and acted the part, but the illusion my aunts so carefully curated often times was shattered when they opened their mouths.
Not that they were terrible people or that they were trying to fool anyone that's just the way people of their era did things
They were hilariously funny, but any air of a lady was thrown out the window when they got together.

I miss my mother very much she was a lot like my grandmother who was also a perfect lady.
I always wanted to be as kind as my grandmother was.

But, I also miss my aunt's who didn't always censor themselves and who you couldn't help laugh with when they made their witty and not always so reverent observations about life.

I'm glad you're writing more. I really enjoyed reading this story. You're a good writer. I'm also one that loves hat pins and brooches. Those were beautiful and I bought one recently that I thought was absolutely beautiful. There's so many that I would love to buy but I don't because well I just don't have anything or an occasion to wear them but I do love looking at them. I've always loved sparkly things, even from a child, on.

Especially love the way you described those days because I remember them the same way. Our family was a family of ladies in every sense of the word. Mom always looked nice. I liked watching her put her makeup on haha and she would dress up so nice for church or anywhere she went but she didn't go many places. She mostly stayed home and took care of the house and it was spic and span. Always. She was always busy working so hard for us. She was a good cook too and I miss her special chili mac. I remember the times we'd go out and play hide and seek and catch lightning bugs in a jar but we'd always let them go. Those were fascinating. Some call them fireflies. We called them lightning bugs. Hahaha

My mom always dressed up too. Even to go to the store. She never left the house without makeup.

@M00ed It was so much fun to go there and us kids how we would giggle... until we were told to leave the table
That sounds very much like my Grandmother. She was a very classy lady. Always dressed to the nines and carried herself with poise

My mother seemed like she was too tired to dress up a lot, after having 5 kids. But when she did she was very classy.

I had one aunt who was very prim and proper and another who was very outgoing and outspoken.

@ReneeT I don't know how my mom did it she had 10 kids I would look like ma kettle
ReneeT · 61-69, F
@Justmeraeagain I had no kids, so dressing up was a little easier for me

Your aunts sound like they were a hoot-and-a-half. 😂 Fun to be around.

My mother's side of the family was very much the same as yours. 5 sisters and 1 brother. Now their mother understand buried 3 husbands. The man in the family on both sides agreed she nagged them to death. If the sisters were all together at a family gathering getting along it was her job to get them fighting. All the nice dress and makeup made no difference. The lady in them no longer existed and the men headed to the basement for their own sanity.
As a kid this was actually entertaining.

@Justmeraeagain my experience is if they weren't arguing they weren't happy. Only one if my aunts ever got divorced so I guess they needed the men to argue with and stay happy

@Gibbon
People, have lost the fine art of bantering , LoL

@Justmeraeagain yeah. It was always forgotten the next day
