I don't know it this helps, or explains it. I am a grandparent. When my wife was alive we would entertain our children and grands at our cabin in the Northwoods. It was fun, engaging and an all around great time.
When the kids and grands left for home it felt like someone sucked the air out of the place. No, I didn't cry, and I don't think my wife did.....but there was definitely a pall, an emptiness.
We both knew that we couldn't keep them with us forever, but just the same, it tugs at the heart that we don't have them more. My wife has passed, and the feelings are even stronger.
I can emphasize with your parents.
