A world without a father, even at my age, feels completely different

I don't know if I'm just old-fashioned, or my father was, but somehow, he felt like a real protector. A buffer and shield from life's bumps. A safety net. Even in later years as he'd aged and his health started to wane, psychologically speaking, he was there...

It's been a strange world since he passed away. I miss him. They say grief comes in waves. It's true.

Your words resonate with me. I understand what you mean. No matter how old we are, there’s something deeply grounding about knowing our parents are still in the world.

We tell ourselves that, with age, we should be prepared for that inevitable day—but I don’t think anyone is ever truly ready when it actually arrives.

The relationship changes, but the love doesn’t. And perhaps that’s why grief comes in waves: because love doesn’t simply end when someone is gone. But we feel the loss when we know the person who receives that love from us is gone from our lives.

Wishing you peace as you navigate those waves, and hoping that, over time, the memories bring more comfort than pain.
🙏 🤍

I know what you must be feeling. Not only is my dad going down hill and the house that I used to grow up in has need of some repair and renovation. Every day I go and see him to help him along. I don't mind doing it but the emotional stress is piling up. Yes, I know that one day soon I'll be in your situation too. Cried yesterday again after seeing him.

I'm pretty attached to my dad too. I hope he outlives me!

@solitaire This is such a touching thing to say, but I wonder how it would be for him to lose a loving daughter? I wish you both long, happy lives 🙂

My mom passed first, and I remember thinking when my father died when I was age 41 that now I am an orphan. He's been gone over 30 years, and I still mourn the loss. But almost daily I am comforted by thinking of something he taught me about life, some skill he shared with me, some fond memory, and I can now think of him and be at peace rather than feel pain. I'm hoping in your grieving process , you soon come to that place of peace.

@Datura Wow - I so often admired your wisdom way back on EP of old and am honoured to be hearing this wisdom from you today. I do hope you and your loved ones are keeping well 🤗

It's been 25 years since my Dad died and I still miss him and the strength he added to my life.

It's a real thing, I do know that!🙄

Mine died suddenly when I was 19. He was a flawed man, whose flaws still effect his kids but always worked hard for his family.

I lost my dad last year and it does feel like a different world. In my dreams sometimes he never died.

I feel for you, my dad is soon to go too, and there'll be no one else like him, he annoyed me a lot, but he was a good dad nonetheless, and no one besides mom, who passed a few years ago, would ever regard me as they did. I guess what has to be done, after a healthy grieving period, is to re-find what used to give you joy. For me it's books films and music. Be patient and honor his memory by how you live the rest of your life knowing he'd be cheering you on.

@Adroneandastrain How comforting of you to say. It's been a bumpy ride. I wish you and yours the best too, friend. Thank you.

When your father dies, you lose your umbrella against bad weather.
WandererTony · 56-60, M
I lost him at 15. 😐

Aw, I feel for you mon ami. The world is never the same without our parents in it. Knowing he is not in pain any longer is hopefully a little comfort for you.🤗

I miss both of mine, but my mother the most. No-one will ever top what she was.

This resonates with me. Even as an adult, life without a father feels like an entirely different world.
Some absences never become normal, you simply learn to carry them, and life is never quite the same.

It is the strangest feeling. Sometimes it’s still hard to believe that he’s gone. Forever. Im sorry you feel this pain too.
Likestoenjoylife · 51-55, M
Yes when my dad passed away was in my 40s married and my own kids but missed talking him about things
This really touched my heart. You and I come from such different backgrounds, and our fathers left us with very different stories. Mine wasn’t the source of safety and protection yours was, so I know our grief looks different. But I do understand that strange feeling when the world shifts after losing a parent. Even complicated relationships leave behind a space that feels impossible to explain. The love and safety your dad gave you became part of who you are, and that’s something grief can never take away. I’m so sorry you’re carrying one of those waves today.

@MyMonstersAreReal And I value your response, too. It's true. Those parental relationships can be difficult too. Things were rough during childhood, I found, but I still see Dad as successful, thankfully. I'm happy he's not in the pain of the illnesses he bore in his final days, bless him.
