What does it say about a father who believes it's the mother's job to raise the children and he refuses to get involved in nurturing and guiding?

My father was like that except for punishment. He used to beat me with a strap for disobedience. He was an authoritarian parent.

It means he was from a generation when all this was considered good parenting and normal and his father raised him the same way too.

I'm sorry you had to go through that though. It's horrible.

Things changed when it became illegal to physically inflict children any pain. My country was among the first to introduce that new law.

And then came the 90's and society as a whole changed and started focusing on equality and human rights and that includes children's rights. As result came a new way to care and foster children where empathy and the child's needs and safety comes first.

This has then developed further to lgbtq kids and to give the child their right to their identity. Which is today's most common needs for trans children.

I'm not saying what your dad did was okay. But where we come from and what we are surrounded with impacts how we respond to the world to a certain level.

It means the guy is ignorant and a lazy parent. A father should guide his children and help build them up

@flipper1966 not everyone deserves to be a parent. Lots of responsibility
@deadgerbil If there was ever any problem with me his standard comment to my mother was "It's your fault. You raised him."
@deadgerbil He didn't get married till he was 40. He was 47 when I was born. His older brother (my uncle) said about him, "He should never have gotten married. He wasn't marriage material."
It says he never learned how to get in touch with his own emotions, and he's afraid of them. I'm sorry you had to deal with him.
