s0o0o Dr. James Dobson died today. Some of you may know him as a huge part of a Christian organization called Focus on the Family.
IIIII know him for 2 main things: purity culture (but masturbation was okay, he said), and 2 books: "Preparing for Adolescence" (see: the masturbation thing) and "The Strong-willed Child".
I went to a mother/daughter retreat to learn about adolescence, having been made to read the first book. All I remember are two things from that as well: the very friendly goat I befriended in the petting zoo on campus, and the dinner I had afterward with my mom.
She somberly, reverently gifted me (and I actually know she meant well with this) a James Avery charm bracelet with a single charm. It was a handheld mirror, and she said that I was to look into it every time I was tempted to sin (sexually mostly), and remind myself who I was.
When I was raped of my virginity and she said I had spread my legs, mayyybe she meant well then too ha....She blamed ME for allowing myself to be in A SITUATION where a RAPIST raped.
Thanks purity culture. My bad for thinking it might be okay to have a guy over to my gma's house to watch a movie.
Now to the 2nd book...the one my parents would WHAP on the kitchen island when they came home from the inconvenience of a church group I never asked them to attend..to discuss me..a wayward, willful child.
First chapter is about how the good doctor first, instead of "doing no harm", decided to "take no shit" from his DOG, who he BEAT. He also described how to corporally harm your children in said book. I have never read it myself, but have heard a synopsis.
