Have you tried a 23 and Me type DNA service. They would likely identify a few cousins who in turn could possibly spread some light on who your genetic family was/is.
FWIW, you might also check the bio of songwriter/entertainer Mary Gauthier. She likewise was adopted and she struggled with it; and almost went off the deep end as a run-away, car thief teen. Some merciful Kansas judge gave her a choice between jail and serious rehab and it was uphill from there.
