I Am An Adult Adoptee

Yes I am and I've done my DNA for 23andMe, MyHeritage, and now waiting on Ancestry's results. :)

Have you contacted anyone who may still be alive from your natural family and do (or don't) they want to share the possible relationship?

This is a sore subject with me. My mother had been dead three years before I got a call one Sunday night from some strange woman in Las Vegas, claiming she was "an adult adoptee" and said my mother was also hers. I denied it, but she said she "had proof" - and she knew more than my mom had ever admitted to. I knew I had a married stepsister (seven years older), and this woman never mentioned her nor my two younger brothers. I told her don't call again. She hung up in my ear and I thought that was that.

Was I ever WRONG! I got in the mail an envelope containing a copy of an adoption decree, a letter from the place who handled her adoption (if she was who she was) and a very snotty letter from this chick referring to us as "half-sisters" and telling me I should not "think badly about your mother" (which I never did). She also warned, "Even if I don't get the information from you, I'll get it from other sources. Where there's a will, there's a way, and I'll find it."

I studied the letter from the facility that handled the adoption and they described the woman as a blonde, blue eyed Catholic of about 21. Me, my mother, and sister were brownettes, with brown eyes. My mom was baptized a Lutheran and changed her religion only after she and my dad began keeping steady company and talking marriage.Neither my dad, nor his best friend who knew my mother before she met my dad, knew anything about this other woman. I wrote her a strong letter and told her the differences between HER mother and MINE. I also told her if she contacted me again, the next letter she got would be from my attorney. I never heard from her again, but I still worry if she's still digging up family history which is none of her business.

I wish I'd never heard from her - now or ever.

Wolfdancer · 56-60, F
@SailorMoon Well, many have been very successful in locating their families so guess they can't be inaccurate.

I hope your experience was better than my shock. I have the feeling that the woman who called was the daughter of my mom's best friend. I never met her, but she mentioned her occasionally - "Lori" this, or "Lori" that. She died after my mother did, and sent us a Christmas card the winter before, asking my mom why she didn't "talk to her anymore". My mom was already buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery at least a year before that!

Oh wow! My birth mother is still living and my half sister along with most of their family. I have no clue about my birth dad
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
According to the paperwork this other woman sent me, the woman claiming to be Mom's daughter told the officials her "birth father" worked in a riding stable in Wisconsin and "was not involved in" her upbringing. Dad told me he knew that statement made her claims a lie because Mom never went to Wisconsin before he married her. Grandma (Mom's mother) was still alive and she confirmed this.

I'm sorry about your birth father, but am glad that you have found a few blood relatives and have a good relationship with them. Merry Christmas!
