Some families track behavior with a demerit or point system — kids (or even adults) lose or gather points for things like talking back, skipping chores, or breaking house rules, sometimes tied to consequences or lost privileges.

Curious where everyone lands on this. Vote below:

It stifles independent thinking. If there's anything closest to it, it would be so called communism.

I'm not referring to punishments. Just solely the point system.

Families are not designed for favoritism. That only happens in so called communism.

Why it's similar to communism.

It's not possible to treat everyone equally. So communism must resort to other methods of advancement. A point system could be one of those methods.

Not exactly no

no, i try to focus on the positive with my kids. i will voice disapproval when necessary and give the reasons why but my approach is to praise good behavior rather than punish bad behavior but then i am a very laid back parent type and am terrible at disciplining the kids. they turned out pretty good though ( i suppose i got lucky and have never really needed to demerit them for anything though) id think that approach may be needed with some kids.

eta- id think it'd only create resentment more than solve any problems though
