I wish I would have gone to school for counseling or psychiatry

I went to school for medical stuff, I should have focused more on the mind. It naturally interests me and also I have a born inclination toward genuinely trying to empathize with people who are struggling. Since my dad had his meltdown and got arrested, I am so tortured, wondering how he got there and what is going on in his mind. If I could help other people who are struggling with mental health like that, I'd feel like I was paying a certain karmic duty to the world, at least in that small way.

I wonder if it's too late to start now. My grandma went to school and became a counselor in her 60s. 🤔

I'm so heartbroken about everything that happened. If he had unalived anyone (especially my brother!) I never would have forgiven him. He really was a good man once. I have to remember that.

It's never too late. First of all, you would probably needvto ask yourself why you are wanting to dive into psychology like this. Secondly, for psychiatry, you need a medical degree. Thirdly, if you are considering making this a career, you will need a masters or PHD to get a decent job. Four decafes ago, a 4 year or 6 year degree was what you needed to get an entry level job in counseling. I know, because I considered it too.
