It was used in my school in the 1960s (more than half a century ago!) and is still a rather ceremonial touch to the semI-formal Annual Dinner of a long-established club to which I belong.
It doesn't mean anything if you are not religious; nor if just a ritual for the sake of ritual or "we've always done it" (to avoid thinking?).
