I met quite a few of my greats. 2 Great Grandmothers on my mother's side, and loads of great Aunts and Uncles on both sides.
My clearest memories are of my great-Aunts Vivienne and Gladys, from my father's side of the family, who, in their old age, lived together in Lincoln, Nebraska. We usually stopped there on our way out to furthest western Nebraska, and spent the night. Vivienne was a former school teacher, and a spinster.
The furniture in their house was very old fashioned, and included a horsehair sofa!! The room in which they put me to sleep had a very scary painting of my great GREAT grandmother in it, and they had to take it down off the wall because she was LOOKING at me...no matter where I moved to in my bed.
Vivienne had a collection of butterflies in the basement of the house, and they were amazing...and I loved them until I learned about the "kill jar".
BOTH Vivienne and Gladys had very, very long hair, which they had never cut in their entire lives. I still remember watching them brush it out at night.
They had the most WONDERFUL vegetable garden...and two of my fondest vegetable memories are being served a sliced beefsteak tomato which came right off the vine, with a little salt. It was the best thing I ever tasted. I also remember VERY fondly that they grew Kohl Rabi...which I had never heard of...and it was also amazingly delicious!
Gladys died young, at age 74, but Vivienne continued to live in that house until she was 91 !!!
