Tell me about the furthest ancestor you remember meeting.

I met my great-grandfather once when I was 5 or 6 years old — he was around 80 at that time. Who did you meet? What do you remember about them?

I’ve met and known three of my four great
-grandparents. I mention all three as I don’t know who was oldest.

My maternal great-grandfather passed away when I was around 8 or 9, I believe. I remember thinking he was very tall, but I’m sure I was just very small then. I remember visiting his home and how outdated it seemed even then, and I remember the chair he always sat in in the back room with his pipe lying on the table beside it. I will always remember that smell.

My paternal great-grandfather I remember least. I think he passed first out of the 3. I mostly just remember his glasses. He built me a hand-crafted rocking chair when I was born. I still have it.

My great-grandmother was such a sweet, old woman. She lived to be around 95. I remember going with my dad to visit her in the nursing home she stayed in. Sometimes we’d get there and have to wait because she was getting her hair done. We’d go into her room and sit on her bed and play with all the little things she had sitting on her dresser. She was very small and extremely hunched over. I remember her long, sharp fingers. I always called her “grandma grape” because I misheard people calling her “grandma great”. Her death and funeral were pretty hard on me. I was extremely upset, and couldn’t bring myself to walk up to her open casket. At her funeral, we stayed to watch her casket be lowered. That’s my last memory of her.
