Secondary School - Year 7 Onwards.

Our daughter started 'Big School' this week.

Exciting for her, scary for me. Even though I am a teacher it hits home more when your child had a new and dramatic turn in their lives.

Both myself and my other 'arf had varying degrees of nerves, but she has a friend who's a year older that looked after her at school, plus her old school friends that have started with her.

We'd planned before of course, asking if she wanted a lift to school - as we always used to do - or show her where the bus is from (number/time etc) if she wanted to get on that. But, no, she's wanting to walk to school. It's not super far but far enough.

1st day? Nerves. Upset stomach (from her), but she went. Came back home, she's gushing with stories and how nice the teachers were, as some of the other kids. That's nice.

Lots of energy. Hyper excited.

The next day? Shattered! Poor girl is tired out!

We all survived. She's enjoyed it. Plus, she's learning about herself a little more.

Case in point; she loves music. Not so much your 'car...far..' kinds of music, but the more complex stuff. Think Frank Zappa/Steve Vai. She plays guitar. She teaches adults to play guitar.

So, she thinks a certain way.

The school has limited equipment and also - obviously - children have different skill sets, ranging from no idea of music to well versed, so hearing some of their 'practicing' making noise has been hard for her.

She does understand - now she does - that not everyone is like her, or even like her own students that want to learn. Some just want to muck about. She's just getting that. Think it'll be a big learning curve for her.

But, in the main, she's enjoying the different lessons and subjects she's heard about so far.
